Battlecruiser Millennium Questions

Post by Kreshna Aryaguna Nurzaman »

Alright, I've just purchased Battlecruiser Millenium Gold at SGD 42.25 (not really cheap for such an old game, heck, I've got Crimson Skies at SGD 17.5!), but haven't got the time to play it yet. Anyway I've read several reviews on the internet, some says it's good, some says it's bad.

So any of you guys played BCM Gold before? Do you hate it or love it? And why? And for those of you who actually enjoyed it, would u share some tips how to play the immense game in most enjoyable way?

Thanks.

Why didn't you just get Universal Combat? :)

Why didn't you just stab yourself in the face a few times? Pencils are even cheaper :)

Seriously, though, the Battlecruiser games, plus Universal Combat, look awesome on paper, great concepts...all destroyed by Derek Smart's total inability to actually make a playable game. They're bugridden, they typically look a number of years out of date, they're very difficult to learn, and just generally not very rewarding play-experiences at all. To put this in perspective, I played Independence War to death, and if that ain't hard to get good in, little is. But /that/ was a good game, the Battlecruiser games simply aren't. My condolences for the waste of money.

Ahh, the Battlecruiser series, the game I always felt I should master.

BGM (or BCG, I don't think there's any difference aside from the multiplayer) is a game that I keep telling myself I should like, and I sorta enjoy it, but it really isn't that great when you stop playing and sit down to reflect about it. Oh, and get a joystick, you just can't move your ship around without it, why? I'd write up a huge post about how much I dislike Derek Smart, but lets just say I don't like him so much.

To answer the question, I cannot. I'd direct you to the 3000ad forums, but you'll likely get flamed out by derek smart himself for asking such a question when you could have simply read his oh so well written manual.

If you *really* want to get into the game, go to www.3000ad.com 's forums and read them. Eventually you might get some sort of idea as to why people enjoy the game. I've yet to figure this one out myself, but if you find this holy grail, be sure to let me know, I'd love to enjoy the game.

Gee, I should knew it! Guess I'm gonna' stick with Crimson Skies anyway. :(

IIRC, I seen a Babylon Five mod somewhere on the net. Now if only there's a Star Destroyer mod for Battlecruiser Millennium....

Derek Smart made his game very difficult to mod....pretty much all the mods are, IIRC, are mods that replace the ship models, nothing else.

There is a B5 mod for I-War 2 which should still be growing in complexity as I don't think the plug has been pulled on the project yet.

Unlikely it ever will be, the Buda 5 team completed two whole campaigns for I-War 1, and Atari isn't too terribly concerned with the state of the I-War community at this time...

In fact, the development team that made the I-War games has recently been laid off. :(

Too bad, if there's a way to change my battlecruiser into a Stardestroyer, my starfighter into TIE fighter, and my FPS weapons into Stormtrooper's weapon....

Anyway, where could I find the mods you've mentioned?

Which is odd, because last I checked it was Infogrames that owned Particle Systems, not Atari. I never noticed the shift. Hell, I thought Atari was dead!

Guess realistic space-sims are beyond most people who'd rather fly an X-Wing like an aeroplane.

White Haven's right. It'd be cheaper and more fun to just fucking stab yourself in the face than try to learn that game, let alone play it. The damn tutorials aren't any different from the main game, except that you can't customize your ship and the starting sector has no enemies in it. No instructions, no explanation for why you're even there.

Oh, and the multiplayer doesn't work.

Long story, but the quick version is this:

Infogrames aquired the Atari brand name to increase awareness in the US, since Atari is a loved company here for gamers. Now, Atari is Infogrames, and vice versa. Particle Systems got bought out or somesuch by Argonaut, became Argonaut Sheffield, and all of the Particle Systems crew got fired about a week ago. :(

Actually I haven't even opened the box (still busy with Crimson Skies 8)). Hmmm.. what should I do with it, then?

Or maybe open the box and try it a little? Well, who knows BCM will get me hooked, and next month I'll be writing a new thread about how wonderful the game is and how brilliant Derek Smart as game developer. :P

Give it a shot, if nothing else, you can use it to kill a few evenings trying to get into the game.

Go ahead and play it, if you feel like it. It takes a few hours to get used to the controls and can be fun if you just want to mess around. Flying a shuttle from your carrier down to Pluto, driving out in an ATV and then going for a stroll is pretty awesome. But there's about 40 sub-submenus to go through and figure out if you want to do that.
