Damn, so it appears that in 2005, the free version of AVG won't be supported, and won't have database updates anymore, which will make it pretty much useless.
Anyone know of any other free, decent Anti-Virus programs?
Title changed in lieu of new information, see Datana's post below - Phong

You'd think what with the problems viruses cause that free updates would actually benefit industry moreso than having to get people to charge or just go without.

AntiVir is a free choice. I was using that before I switched to AVG.

Not getting the computer infected in the first place usually works...
Besides that I've got the free DOS version of F-Prot, but that isn't always-on, just scans on demand.

Exactly. I don't personally use it, but I've been installing it on every windows box I find that doesn't have any protection at all.

It's a commercial version of wine that's tuned for gaming. You can get it for free but you can only build it from the cvs tree if you decide to get it that way. They distribute it in binary form for members.

Actually, it looks like they're upgrading the free edition to a new engine, as well, and it's just the current version that's being phased out. From their front page for the free edition:
free.grisoft.com wrote:New Generation of AVG Free Edition to Replace Current 6.0 Free Edition
GRISOFT is pleased to announce that the next generation of AVG Free will be available soon!
The new AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, which is currently available for Beta testing, is scheduled to be Generally Available at the beginning of November.

EDIT: Some more info at

If their giving you guys 7.0, your going to like it, clean UI, no wasted 'graphics' like Norton.

You have a reason why? just because you probebly run bloated Norton Antivirus, which can't even catch 100% of the viruses out today, dosn't mean jackshit.

Ace Pace, DD runs Linux IIRC. So he doesn't need to worry about it.
