Nintendo DS Question
With two weeks to go until release, I haven't found any documentation as to whether Nintendo's new Dual Screen portable system will be able to play original Game Boy or Game Boy color games. If it doesn't I sure as hell don't want one because I don't want to have to carry around two systems in order to play the handful of games I own.
The gift of Superman is the same in his universe as ours. It's not about his powers, his costume, his persona, it's about the using the gifts he has to help people. We all have gifts too, maybe we can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but maybe we're good with math, maybe we're charming. We can use our gifts -whatever they are- to help people. We just need to make that choice. And Superman shows us that it's possible.

No word on if it can play original GameBoy games or not. I hope it can, but if it can't, oh well.
Don't forget, the PSP can't play ANY gameboy games, so if you get that you'll still have to carry two systems.
You said it yourself you have a handful of games...keep an old gameboy for the handful of older games, and get the DS. Either that, or go emailing the people at ds.ign.com till you get an answer since we're not sure
so you know, the IGN dudes got sent the final release of the Nintendo DS so they actually have one system.
BTW, the Nintendo DS is NOT a GameBoy successor, so you know. Wait for the next GameBoy if you want.

True, but the PSP will be able to play Playstation games (at least, I think it will) so I will still have a decent library from the moment put the batteries in. I only have like three GBA games.Praxis wrote:

Gamespot got three. They tried out the wireless multiplayer. Not of much use to me, I'm the only gamer in my circle of friends.so you know, the IGN dudes got sent the final release of the Nintendo DS so they actually have one system.
How can it not be a Game Boy successor? It plays GB(A) games, it has several key design elements from the previous Game Boy, and Nintendo has already made a non-Game Boy portable machine which failed miserably. If the DS is not supposed to be a Game Boy successor, what is?BTW, the Nintendo DS is NOT a GameBoy successor, so you know. Wait for the next GameBoy if you want.

No, the PSP won't fit Playstation games. You'll have to re-buy all your playstation games in PSP format (specially formatted mini-disks). You can't just pop in your PS2 games. So you won't have ANY games for the PSP.ReinnResauq wrote:

Additionally, both PSP and DS have built in batteries (nothing to put in ), but the DS's lasts twice as long.
It's a third system. The GameCube can play GBA games too, remember, but it's not a sucessor.

There will be a GameBoy successor eventually (it's been stated by Nintendo) and it'll likely have a single screen.

You're fucking with me. I figured the damn thing would just be a portable PSOne, effectively a CD player with a screen. Goddamn piece of cocksucking shit! The more I learn about the video game industry's path, the more I begin to despise what used to be one of the most respectable industries.Praxis wrote:

I'm getting so damn confused...if it looks like a Game Boy, talks like a Game Boy, works like a Game Boy, what makes it not a Game Boy?It's a third system. The GameCube can play GBA games too, remember, but it's not a sucessor.

Not being called a Game Boy.ReinnResauq wrote:I'm getting so damn confused...if it looks like a Game Boy, talks like a Game Boy, works like a Game Boy, what makes it not a Game Boy?

And there IS a PS1 that's small and with a screen on it. Find that if you want something the size of a dictionary that plays your PS1 games, and requires (I think) an outlet to do so (even if it IS on batteries, you'll go through them like candy).

No, it's too small. It's smaller than a CD player. It's long enough, but nowhere near wide enough to take a full sized CD. You need to buy the games on mini-disks.ReinnResauq wrote:You're fucking with me. I figured the damn thing would just be a portable PSOne, effectively a CD player with a screen. At least the DS has backwards compatability with GBA games...
First of all, it's way bigger than a GameBoy. Each incarnation of the GameBoy has gotten smaller, and the DS is way larger than the last one (the SP). The GameBoy is a mini-handheld, the DS is a maxi-handheld, and the GameCube is a console. That's the entire nintendo lineup.I'm getting so damn confused...if it looks like a Game Boy, talks like a Game Boy, works like a Game Boy, what makes it not a Game Boy?It's a third system. Secondly, it doesn't use the same slot. It does have a second slot for GBA games, but DS games are a completely new cartridge type. GameBoys usually have the same type of slot.
And finally, most importantly, it doesn't have GameBoy in the name

Only in a few pictures with no regard for scale.
Most likely.You're fucking stupid.
I figured the PSP would be a subtle improvement on that, using smaller more powerful components while still backwards compatible with PSOne games. That seemed like a logical progression of the Playstation line. Apparently I overestimated the respect the company had for its consumers. And there IS a PS1 that's small and with a screen on it. As for the DS, as I said, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's still a duck. And, if it apparently isn't backwards compatible with all Game Boy games and there's a new Game Boy coming out sometime that will be, it's also staying off my bank statement.

That wasn't the intention of the line. Something like that would have a). no battery life, and b.) not nearly as portable. The intention was to break into the handheld market.ReinnResauq wrote:I figured the PSP would be a subtle improvement on that, using smaller more powerful components while still backwards compatible with PSOne games. No offence, RR, but WHERE the Hell have you been since E3? All that has been known since both the DS and PSP were first announced...

It MAY not be backwards compatible with BLACK AND WHITE GameBoy games. That's like complaining that my GameCube can't play NES games.ReinnResauq wrote: As for the DS, as I said, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's still a duck. And there won't be a new GameBoy for a long time. Nintendo hasn't even started working on it. They just stated that there eventually will be. Probably won't be for at least another 1.5 years at least.

Not "may not," it's been confirmed by Nintendo that the DS WILL NOT play Gameboy or Gameboy Color cartridges, but will be backwards-compatable only with Gameboy Advance cartridges.

Where was this confirmed? I've been searching everywhere. It's the one thing I couldn't find any official confirmation on, and it's been driving me nuts.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Not "may not," it's been confirmed by Nintendo that the DS WILL NOT play Gameboy or Gameboy Color cartridges, but will be backwards-compatable only with Gameboy Advance cartridges.

The latest Nintendo press release for the DS, or at least the one put out on 21 September:
If the DS' game library included Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, that number would be well over 1000, for one.The complete lineup of games planned for the launch of Nintendo DS will be announced in the near future. In effect, Nintendo DS already boasts a library of more than 550 games because it is compatible with single-player modes of games made for the world's best-selling video game system, Game Boy® Advance SP

I guess that implies it, though considering they don't sell GB and GBC games anymore, that might explain why they're not counted...Spanky The Dolphin wrote:The latest Nintendo press release for the DS, or at least the one put out on 21 September:

You're probably right though.

Um...I haven't been anywhere since before or after E3. I don't really follow the gaming scene that much. I got my PS2 last July, my GBA the year before. I'm too broke to do much more.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:No offence, RR, but WHERE the Hell have you been since E3? All that has been known since both the DS and PSP were first announced...
And now I'm wishing I kept my GBC instead of giving it to an ungrateful little brat when I got my GBA.

If you're planing to play those games multiplayer, you'll need to keep the SP. DS isn't compatible with anything but the single player modes, like that press release above said.Praxis wrote:I'll keep my old GameBoy Color (it's only worth $20 at most anyway) and trade in my SP when I get the DS.

They've had portable CD players for almost two decades. It wouldn't be that much larger to stick an LCD and a couple of buttons onto a CD player. It wouldn't be as pocket sized as even a DS, but CD players aren't pocket sized anyway and we put up with that particular hassle. More importantly, you'd have 700 megs of game to take on the bus.Sharp-kun wrote: How did you expect a CD to fit in a portable?
