Marvel and the lovableness

I've had lots of fun with "City of Heroes," and fucking Marvel comics has to whine about people being able to make toons who look like their characters. Notice how Marvel, NOT DC or Darkhorse, is the one whining here. Even though anyone can make a Superman or Batman copy, as well as a Marvel copy, Marvel is making the issue. God, now I really hate them. Fuck you, Marvel.

This is really the first online RPG I have ever liked. The whole point is being able to make super heroes. Of course if you make a big muscular dude and paint him green he will look like the Hulk. Marvel is bitching about this? Jesus...

Also putting this in G&C since at heart is Marvel bitching about City of Heroes.

Yeah, this is bullshit and it really pisses me off. Argh! You know, lots of people who play this are comic fanatics. Hopefully, they'll get pissed off enough at Marvel to start writing them or something.

Again, notice how DC is not doing this... Fucking Marvel comics.

From what I understood, making someone with a copyrighted name/costume got you in trouble with the admin.

Of course, I'm hearing this second-hand, from my friend "DeathBunny" on Justice server....

Yes, that is true. If I make that big green guy and call him "Hulk," the admins will contact you and make you change the name. I watched it happen to a guy who made a Captain America clone.

The sad thing here is that people make these copies because they really like those characters. They're playing as that character because they're big fans. Marvel is really make a bad move here, I think.

Somehow i just knew it was going to happen.. i dunno why but i just did.

After playing 28 lvls in Coh though I have only seen a small handfull of people making copies of comic characters. And usually when they do they are very unpopular with most of the people who play even before a gm forces them to change their name. To me it seems more like a big company coming and telling kids you cant play wolverine in your front yard because its a copyrighted character. And how will they fix the hulk copiers anyways? Disable huge character models? Oh and green skin.. oh yea and noone can have purple pants. Cest la vie at least i know my character looks nothin' like a current comic character... well he kinda looks like the shadow but i had no intent of making it that way. Someone just mentioned to me he looked like him like last week.. been playing 4 months now.

Apparently Marvel is pissed about even having a "mutant" origin, as if they have exclusive rights to mutant characters. I will admit that the "claws" power is sort of a blatant Wolverine rip off, but shit, one could make the argument that wearing a cape is a Superman rip off. Again, why is only Marvel bitching here?

Perhaps their recent multi-media successes have gone to their head.

They're obviously not content with the recent surge in profits from actually quite good Marvel films.

For some reason I want to buy City of Heroes and burn copies of "Spiderman" to give as gifts. If I could afford it I'd by “Spiderman 2” and burn dvd copies, stand in front of Wal-Mart and give the movie away. Sure it's illegal, but the price tag on dvds is robbery. Greedy people make me feel all Robin Hoody.

I disagree, I think DVDs are quite fairly priced (well, not the MSRP, but what stores sell them for, at least). Spidey 2 will probably be about 20 bucks at Wal-Mart or Best Buy. That's not too steep, IMO.

you could probably find copies of spidey 2 in a pawn shop for under $10.00 if you really bothered looking.

Goodness sakes. That's just silly.

My brother played CoH as the Thnikkaman. It was perfect. He even had people messaging him saying "Here comes the Thnikkaman!" because it was so good. The Brothers Chaps would have been pleased; it's free advertising and shows off people's admiration for them.

Why don't these corporations get it? They're more obsessed with getting a buck today (and then handing it over to their lawyers as they sue their fanbase) rather than getting twenty bucks from their loyal fans tomorrow.

Because of the inherent mentaility of the upper management that Marvel somehow fosters.

Take two points

1. They are suing Sony over who has the movie rights over Spiderman(something they didn't care until after Spiderman became a success).

2. Stan Lee is SUING them over the FACT they are denying he had any contractual agreement over a Spiderman film. Something he has with every Marvel character he had a hand in.

Oh and as the kicker they are paying for his lawsuit...they pay him a million a year to use Stan Lee Presents...

This is just another point of Marvel doing their damndest to be the absolute fucktards of the comic book industry in more ways then Dark Horse, DC and everyone else combined.

Hmm, Scott Kurtz, creator of the PvP webcomic, personally thinks it might have connections with Marvel's planned MORPG with Vivendi, particularly an attempt to soften potential competition with CoH...

Which, of course, would be standard corporate practise, and will guarantee that a portion of the audience that would have migrated to their own offering (if it's any good) will now not do so.

You know it's going to suck. It's really beyond Marvel to put out any halfway decent games...
