Anyone interested in helping out a crossover mod?

Post by Alan Bolte »

There's a guy over at Hard Light Productions forums that wants to combine the in-progress B5, ST, and SW mods, possibly while adding BSG or some other universes, and make a bigass crossover mod for Free Space 2. To be brief: I volunteered to help with data for weapons, armor, etc., and said I'd see if anyone here at SDnet with knowledge of the relative capabilites of the universes was also interested.

If you aren't familiar with it, FS2 is a game like Wing Commander or X-Wing which defaults to constant-forward-velocity type space combat. It's not great for making a really accurate sim, but it is fun. The upside is that it was built with modding in mind, and the source code has been released.

Most of the time I see this sort of thing start and I just ignore it while it fizzles out on its own or erupts in flamewars, but this guy brings at least some previous modding skill to the table and has gotten good reactions from the existing mods. The best part is that he seems to be interested in following fairly closely to the canon, and does not appear to have many perconceptions. Balancing will be left up to mission designers. If no one's interested, I'll just bug SvT and OSF occasionally when I can't figure stuff out on my own.

FS2's awesome, but eh, dunno as I'd want to shove effort into modding for an engine that old, if you ever want to port to a modern engine, all your models will be hideously low-poly and hence need reworking, so you're in essence dead-ending a LOT of work. Don't get me wrong the game is beautiful, but it shows its age. No game since, however, has matched the sheer majesty of FS2's beam weapons :)
