How much is an xbox live subscription?

Hey, I was wondering since I'm hoping to get Halo 2 in like a week (when my birthday is) and I was thinking about xbox live and whether or not it would be a worthy investment. How much is the subscription cost and what do you need in order to connect.

So far buy the starter kit and needing a DSL or Cable or higher Internet.
As for subscription pricing, you buy one year then pick between monthly and annual plans
Monthly: 5.99
Annual: 49.99

Could it work with a wireless network adaptor connected to the cable modem?
