Kuja's thoughts on Halo 2 (spoilers)
I got to play the game at my friend's this weekend, but I didn't finish it and I'm not going into the big thread for fear of spoilers. I got up to the point where the Prophet of Mercy gets chomped on by the Flood and the MC has to go after Truth. Then I had to go (d'oh).
Visually, the game is stunning. Everything is fleshed out in detail, from cracks in the rocks to scuff on weapons. Covenant weapons no longer look like plush kiddy toys; they look fucking menacing.
Covenant Drones are a royal pain in the ass, Brutes even moreso. Tell ya, nothing gets the blood pumping like turning a corner and coming face-to-face with a pack of evil gorillas with an itch. I must say, it did feel really good to saunter up behind one that wasn't paying attention and dispatch him with a single blow.
Vehicles have changed, mostly for the better. The Warthog in both forms is still a ball to drive. The Scorpion has slowed down, to my annoyance, but it's faster firing rate makes up for it. The Ghost feels more solid now, and the weapons are infinitely more pleasing to use than last time. The Wraith is also a solid performer, slightly weaker than the Scorp but faster to make up for it. The Banshee is still too awkward and suffers from turning problems, but is otherwise dependable. The Spectre (the Covvie Warthog, as my friend calls it) is too fragile to be effective.
Taking over vehicles is a great addition to the game. There's nothing quite like kicking a Brute out of his seat, then spinning his Ghost around and flattening him. Sucker.
The new weapons are a mixed bag. I adore the Fuel Rod Cannon (eat this, Hunter bitches!) but the Brute shot can be annoying. The Needler is now a fucking menace. Don't get caught on the wrong end. The new battle rifle is pleasing, but the SMG is unreliable. The Coveneant carbine is a somewhat poor performer compared to most, but it holds its own. The Beam rifle is wicked. The Sentinal cannon is like death incarnate. And then there's my personal favorite: THE FUCKING SWORD! Get your ass over here you fuckers, I'll decap you one by fucking one! Watching the Flood explode when hit by the sword just never gets old.
The rocket launcher's new homing featuer is fucking evil. Shooting down Banshees just got a lot more fun. The ability to dual-wield makes for some really nasty attack options (double Needler is just fucking wicked).
Now, onto the story. I am very, very pleased that Halo 2 has not disappointed me on this count. The story has taken numerous left turns the left me gaping in astonishment, such as the leader of the Flood and the Covenant civil war (more on this later).
Revealing the names of the Covenant races was a nice touch. I especially like the new name for the Elites; the Sangheili. Unggoy is an appropriately amusing name for the Grunts. I don't care too much for Okgolo though, I think I'll keep calling them Hunters.
Telling the story from the Arbiter's point of view is a great addition and makes for interesting depth, watching him start out hunting a heretic, slowly befriending the Sangheili captain (the guy in white), becoming a pawn of Tartarus and then the Flood, then finally getting to unload on the backstabbing Brutes.
I should note here that Halo 2 is the second video game to ever make me cry. When the Flood released the Arbiter and he found a plasma rifle lying on the ground, I thought, "well that was prety conviniant." Then I turned the corner and found the awful truth: Sangheili bodies everywhere, carelessly strewn across the ground without regard. The music of the level just added to the shock and pain as I picked up an energy sword and threw myself at the first Brute I saw. I never even noticed the tears until I reached up to rub my eyes (I thought I was having an allergy attack) and felt them.
Oh, and bravo to the writers at Bungie. The Prophets are deluded fools. Tartarus and his Brutes are ambitious bastards. Even the Flood has become a fascinating character. And Guilty Spark's back. Looking forward to settling that score.
The music of the game is appropriately epic, and the increased use of guitar was a good touch. Looking forward to the soundtrack.
Well, that's about it. Can't wait until I get a chance to get back to it. Guilty Spark, Tartarus, and the Prophet of Truth still need to get what's coming to them.

Yeah well...then there's the ending....and the screaming...and the wondering...and more screaming...and then the knowledge of a three year wait minimal.

Silver lining: there will be a third Halo game. It's even possible that it could be photorealistic (after all, the launch titles on the Xbox Next are).Ghost Rider wrote:Yeah well...then there's the ending....and the screaming...and the wondering...and more screaming...and then the knowledge of a three year wait minimal.

Re: Kuja's thoughts on Halo 2 (spoilers)
I never noticed the names. And I am one of those people, some would call weirdos, who get so into the game, I will be sad when one of my soldiers dies. And another thing. On legendary the grunts are as deadly as Elites from Halo on normal.Kuja wrote:Now, onto the story. I am very, very pleased that Halo 2 has not disappointed me on this count. No, they just fire really fast, do lots of damage, and come in alrge numbers. Especially when they have what amounts to support machine guns set up [even on Normal, the two of those in the first level can cut down the Chief in seconds.]
Speaking of which, the names are interesting:
Sangheili: Elites.
Lekgolo: Hunters. Tswana for "One Hundred", possibly a reference that they are colony organisms of an indeterminate number of tiny orange worms.
Yanme'e: Drones.
Kig-Yar: Jackals. Unknown Language, Google turns it up a synonym on a dictionary sight which is French for "Poultry".
Unggoy: Grunts. Tagalog for "Monkey".
Jiralhanae: Brutes. Korean slang for "Retarded Lunatic [?]".
Anyone know the origin of Sangheili or Yanme'e?
Edit- A bit of Google Juggling shows Kig-Yar to be a word from the language "Breton" and literally means "Bird [?] Meat".

That one is hightly appropriate.MRDOD wrote:Jiralhanae: Brutes. Korean slang for "Retarded Lunatic [?]"
Get lots of hits for "Yanme" looks to be some word in the "Potawatomi" language. Think its beaning is some varation of "threat"

LoL!!! $5 more, I did!!!
I'm just a little past Kuja, so I won't give anything away. So far though I've had a blast. I like to work things out sometimes, but what I want in a game is what this one has. Action, and lot's of it. I've hit a few parts where it's dragged just a little, or at first seemed to hard, but now that I've gotten the controls down, it's been awesome! I love the Brutes. It's like fighting a mix between Elites and Hunters. I just try to avoid them while pumping them full of thier own Brute Plasma shots. I also have a new found respect for the sword in multiplayer in this. Since it's limited in ammo, I have to pick my shots, which has helped me in battles. If all you have is an XBox, this is a must have. If your like me, it's still a must have. It's a hell of a lot more fun then Halo was.

I know, but in single it doesn't. So I've learned to be more careful with it. Which in turn keeps me from over using it in multi and getting my ass kicked. Nothing says 'surprise' like an adversary thinking I have a sword when I'm also packing buckshot.

The Story in Halo 2 is the best story I have ever witnessed in a FPS. Watching the story unfold from 2 perspectives is a great touch. I really enjoyed seeing more of the Covenant inner workings. All I can say is that the Elites are Bad-asses and Brutes are really annoying (especially if they go beserk).

may I be allowed to wank gratuituously about the Banshee in multiplayer? holy fuck you can dodge missiles endlessly. Just don't press X or you'll fall hundreds of feet to your death.

Yeah but pressing X at a untimely fashion makes for some great moments of *WTF?!*.Col. Crackpot wrote:may I be allowed to wank gratuituously about the Banshee in multiplayer? holy fuck you can dodge missiles endlessly. Just don't press X or you'll fall hundreds of feet to your death.
Though for Multi have gained much love for Rocket Launcher as a semi sniping weapon.

Want to frustrate Ghost pilots? Stay right above them, since they can't shoot straight up. Enjoy watching them turn various colors.Col. Happened to me in singleplayer during that level where you need to protect the Phantom. I wanted to fire the cannon, but instead my guy suddenly climbed out of the cockpit!Yeah but pressing X at a untimely fashion makes for some great moments of *WTF?!*.

Actually, He might be right. The manual as well as the new Art of Halo book now describe the Hunters as being giant bi-pedal colonies of hundreds or thousands worms that come together for mutual defense. That unusual biology may be the reason why we don't see any Flood Hunters.Kuja wrote:Doubtful considering the 'bond brother' mentality seen in The Flood. Of course, THIS monstrosity that was removed from the game, but left on the disk may have been Bungie's idea for a Flood Hunter.

Yeppers...that what I need to see for Halo 3...and uglier Flood critter which will undoubtably pop from nowhere to chow on me.Of course, THIS monstrosity that was removed from the game, but left on the disk may have been Bungie's idea for a Flood Hunter.
