Using IE...convert to Firefox?

I'm just reconnected, using IE with XP Service Pack 2. I assume it's still worthwhile switching to Firefox?
If so what version, and is there any general info about it that could be useful?

Firefox 1.0 (final release).
What info you need? Just install and you're good to go.

There are a bunch of useful extensions you can get (toos->extensions). I have the advanced highlighter button, linkification, disable targets for downloads, webmailcompose, image zoom, gmail notifier, magpie, tabbrowser preferences, and BBcode installed.

Just so you know, he meant tools not toos. Secondly, if you have an LJ make sure to get Deepest Sender. As for themage (Tools>Themes) I recomend Charamel and/or Gray Modern.

firefox has tons of options that you simply won't get with IE. it's definitely worth the 4.5 meg download.

Is this a rhetorical question?

*smites the heretic*
Get it already, IE is a piece of shit that just had a new vulnerability publicized, and ot was bad enough that the Finnish Communications Authority issued a public warning against using IE, and that made the prime time news as a major item. Hasn't happened in a good long while, about eight months ago last I remember...
Or if not Firefox, at least the Mozilla suite (I'm using that, I like having everything in one package).

Okay, I've just installed Firefox 1.0.
A few questions, I realize that Firefox veterans will probably find these simplistic but I've been using IE so long I've got used to it. Since the time that I wrote a few months ago that I got infested with Spyware, I was determined to try and stop this happening. Using Firefox seems to be a popular first step.
1. On IE I could drag certain program icons onto the toolbar to create shortcuts. This I could do with ICQ, MSN and AIM. Can you do it here?
2. The Site address bar. Can this be moved if necessary?
3. The themes? Is this something like Windows themse? Just basically a graphical 'tart up'?
4. What extra tools and so on are useful to have, and for what reason.

I believe there was a security bulletin somewhere from the Department of Homeland Security advising people to switch browsers.

Wow. I'd never knew that. Microsoft better shape up or they'll lose customers...

I don't think it was overly concerned with the home user, but think in the number of industries, in the commercial and things like military R&D that still might use IE and I guess you can see their concerns.

Oh, of course. They might target PC browsers to smite the American way of life.
Get real. Military installations equals strong firewall protection.

I've also started playing with Firefox. I've got admit, that while being a pro-Microsoft guy, that Firefox has a several features that I love that IE has missing, and seems to have higher IQ when displaying various image formats. I'm close to switching to Firefox as my default browser.
Now, does anyone know if an extension exists for proper viewing of Outlook Web Mail? We use Outlook 2003 at the office, and Firefox screws up the layout when viewing it from the web (it looks fugly).

I assume the two 'ad links' on the toolbar saying "Try AOL for Free" and "Windows Marketplace" can be safely deleted?

1) Don't know.
2) View>Toolbars>Customize then drag it where you want. Goes for most elements of the browser actually.
3) Tools>Themes>Get More Themes then find one you like.
4) That's already been covered. If there's anything specific you'd like to do (control your media player, use a Live Journal etc) just tell me and and I'll point you at an extension to do that. Or you could just go to Tools>Extensions>Get More Extensions and browse around till you find something good.

I highly recommend you download the Adblock extension. Then you can permanently adblock those STINKING BANNER ADS! WHOOO! Whenever you see a banner ad you hate, right click on it, press Adblock, and replace the last bit of the URL with a * and you will block all ads from that site. It rules.
I also recommend BugMeNot. You right click and press BugMeNot on any site which requires a registration, and it gives you a username and password to use to get around the registration.
Also, "Allow Right Click" lets you right click on pages that have scripts to prevent you from right clicking.

No no no. You don't burn heritics of that sort. You cover them in fish Oil and release them into a tank full of hungry penguins while shouting "YAY FOR LINUX!!!"

You need Thunderbird for that.
