How do I store and retrieve variables in Word XP?

I tried Googling to find the answer, but I got very few hits and the ones I did get I didn't understand.
I've made a
blank character sheet for a roleplaying game in Word for players to fill in. As you can see (if you clicked the link) it's set up with text boxes. I would like for some text boxes to be automatically filled in based on the values entered in other text boxes. How do I do that?

You actually might be better off using Excel for this sort of thing.

Excel looks ugly when it does these things. I want it to look purdy
There's no way to embed an invisible spreadsheet into Word, is there?

Actually, there is a way to insert Excel into it. Unfortunately I can't remember just how right now.

I got Excel into it, it's not pretty, as per usual, but it works. I'll see if I can reference values in between the two.

I'm just wondering if there's a way to crop one of those spreadsheets so that the whole thing is "there", but you only see one cell. That would work visually. It wouldn't look as nice as the text boxes we have now, but it would look OK.
Alternatively, I wonder if there's a way to do what I need in Acrobat Professional 6.0. If so, I could convert to .pdf and work with that.

You might be able to write a VBA macro to do it. You're better off using Excel.
