The Nintendo DS has been tunneled! w00t!

Post by Praxis »

As of today, the Nintendo DS has been tunneled by Team Xlink. They are the first to have done it. Utterly sweet. They played Metroid Prime: Hunters demo online between the two DS's, and sent a few PictoChat messages.

Must...get...tunnelling...software...

What's Tunnelling?

Nitram, slightly high on cough syrup: Do you know you're beautiful?
Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Your Nintendo DS connects to your PC. Your friend, at his house in another city/state/country connects his DS to his PC. Your two PC's connect to each other online, and forward everything from the Nintendo DS's. The result is the two game systems think they're in the same room on a LAN (the current Nintendo DS games are not online, only LAN capable, with wireless), even though they're on opposite sides of the world.

Cool, eh? It's especially hard with the DS since it requires some driver hacks for the wireless card to pick up the signal (the DS wireless is 802.11b, but the protocol is proprietary and has no IP addresses, only MAC), but it allows non-Internet LAN only games to be played on the Internet.

They already have a program that does this for GameCube, PS2, and XBox (so it's a free XBox live replacement), called XLink Kai. Next update will add Nintendo DS support :D

Fine, connecting a DS to another DS THROUGH the internet, where its NOT supposed to go.

Well actually, some games will support Internet play, it's just that the current five games out there are LAN-only and can't connect online.
