OK if you could create your own version of Grand Theft Auto what would you do?? where would you place it? Would you add any new things, remove a few anoying things ? Set it in an old locale with a new look ?

This calls to mind a silly conversation a friend and I had a while back:

The problem is that it would have to be an English-speaking area to avoid losing something in translation, so you're limited in your choice for new places. Maybe something on Hawaii?

I like the SA style of skills and stats, so I'd keep that. The setting is really the only thing I'm not sure on. A return to Vice City might be cool. This time you could have the Everglades, the Keys, etc. Maybe you're a new guy taking out the entrenched mob. Tommy Vercetti would be the last boss. :D

How about a return to Liberty City? Simply Expand the city to be more like Whereever add in small towns and such.Kep skills ....add in businesses you can buy and then if you do special missions you can gain added income from them.

London and Chicago come to mind most immediately as important English-speaking cities that haven't been explored.

EDIT:
Texas also has three metropolitan areas with populations well over a million. A game could be made in a hypothetical Texan "super-city" which consolidated San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

I'd like to see another perdiod piece with GTA. Perhaps NYC in the 1950's. You could have McCarthyists running around. :)

I heard of it, naturally, but I never played it. If you're going to tie yourself down to English speaking cities only, London is excellent. I think it would be possible (and fun!) to set a GTA in Russia, but oh well.

GTA: London (or some such fictional name equivalent). Vice Sity, SA and Liberty City are all from the original GTA, so why not make the next game based on London 1969 (though not setting it in 1969 ... unless they really want to) Besides, they need to cover the whole Guy Ritchie Lock Stock/Snatch/Mean Machine etc. genre sooner or later.

GTA: Motor City. Detroit in the early 1970s. All the great muscle cars, with whole new driving and damage models, so you can work on a car, tweaking it out without each car lasting a total of three blocks. You become attached to certain cars, refusing to take them on missions you know will be dangerous.

Also, get rid of the auto aim and greatly reduce enemy accuracy and make the damage more like the first GTA. Make use of something like the excellent cover system from Manhunt.

Don't give cars "hit points", but actually model the effect of each crash, each bullet, etc. You run into a wall at 100 mph and you total the car, but get in 37 different 10 mph collisions and your car won't suddenly catch fire and then explode. Also adopt something similar to Mafia for what happens to the driver.

And for god's sake, get a new engine! One that will look as amazing when it comes out as GTA3 did when it came out.

Grand Theft Hobo.

You're a bum on a misson. Several missions, in fact. Got that spare change....now what? Get a beer? Or get a sandwich?

The possiblities are endless. ;)

I was thinking of having several areas inspired by different parts of the world, and an airport in each area that allows you to go between regions.

A science fiction setting would be interesting. Set it on a small ringworld (which would explain the short day) during an intergalactic conflict, which isolates it from outside contact (no starships, communication, etc.). Something like the Foundation story. Then you get speeders, shuttles, laser guns, robots, crazy fucking toys... it'd be a blast!

I'd call it Grand Theft Starship: The Cleaners.

You play Chris O'Farrell, deranged kleptomaniac. Your mission is to steal The Cleaners' beer and whatever cool toys they have most recently acquired.

The game would feature such cool things as THE FEARMEISTER (tm), Lt. Hit-Man, and would allow space combat (although your success at it may vary).

I did hear a rumour once that instead of San Andreas, the next GTA game would've been set in Los Angelese, 2019 (a la Bladerunner). That'd be cool. Neon, flying cars, maybe not so much rain.

San Andreas is Los Angeles. GTA:SA is just set in 1990s LA. But yeah, 2019 LA would be cool...

A GTA set 20-200 years from now would be cool, but I wonder what they would do for the radio function, since you couldn't get the rights to songs from the era like you could in Vice City and San Andreas. They could make stuff up, and have a few "classic" stations that play music from today, but that would get repetitive fast.

I would be completely fine with nothing but GTA talk radio.

GTA: London '69, it's the obvious choice given it is the only GTA game that hasn't been reimagined like the three other cities were.

Sure we already have the two Getaway games, but GTA is a different style and not anywhere near as realistic.

Have a more realistic vehicle damage (tranny trouble, suspension shot, etc), have standard and automatic tranny vehicles, a lot of upgrade options and the ability to buy a car from a auto dealer. (In VC I have a dealership but occasionally if a cop is nearby when I enter my car I get a star). Banks to deposit money or to rob them (but don't make them mission dependant). Home invasions? Basically make the game comepletly accessible (homes, businesses, factories, hospitals, graveyards, etc...)

Also, the radio stations in GTA 3 were still cool. I especially liked K-Jah, better than K-Jah West on SA.

Also, if they did that, they could make the radio stations .Wav files again, like in GTA3 - you could record your own stations :)
