My Brothers computer has been having the blue screen of death upon start up so we took it in to CompUSA where we got it.(also it was still in the warranty.) So they tell us the motherboard was corrupted. So my brother wants to know what could have caused it. And I dont know, so I am asking you guys.

A motherboard corruption is probebly traced to a bad cable somewhere, bad power connections, or a screwed up BIOS update.

OK, he was wondering if all the files he had gotten from filesharing could have caused it. I didnt think so. So I asked you guys.

Eh, knowing the shitty average quality of CompUSA tech support, some idiot was talking out his ass and trying to sound smart by saying 'corrupted.' The board may well be bad, but 'corrupted?' In all my years of being a tech, I have /never/ run into a 'corrupted' BIOS. Totally trashed, unbootable boards that may be a BIOS problem, sure, but 'corrupted?' Hell no.
Best way to tell is to hook up a blank hard drive and install the OS fresh on it. If the fresh install bluescreens, you've got a hardware problem. If it doesn't, you've (probably) got a software problem. The only time you can trust CompUSA's evaluations is A) When you already know what's wrong, and B) When it's under warranty and you can get a free part out of it.

Never sneeze at free, but don't be surprised if it's not the motherboard. They may be right, but the quality of MOST CompUSA techs leaves a lot to be desired.
