Anyone have World of Warcraft?

I'm thinking about getting it for my brother for Christmas, since he likes MMORPG's, but I've also heard that such games can really stink up the joint when they first come out. How is WoW? Would you recommend it as a gift?

It's looking pretty good. Almost all lag and server issues have been resolved now. Blizzard has their shit together.

I played about an hour and a half on my friend's machine last night and it is sweet.

I would not but only because it's eaten the lifes of several of my friends. Other than that the game isn't bad at all.

Well, my brother never really had much of a life to eat.

So far it's sounding like a winner.

It's incredible. I am now completely addicted to it.

Its very polished; it didn't suffer from early bugs as much as most MMORPGs do. Go for it.

I have it but I haven't installed it yet because I'm too busy studying for finals. But from what I hear from my friends who have it, it totally kicks ass.

Why couldn't SWG kick ass *cry*

Goes back to playing SWG

In all seriousness, I've heard it's a pretty fun game. I've invested so much time and money into SWG, though, that I won't be switching over. If I was starting from scratch, though, I'd proly take WoW.

WoW > EQII. Though I play more EQII because of the time invested. I like WoW for the graphics. I dig the "Cartoony" look to it. I can turn graphics all the way up on my machine and the game looks spectacular. I like eye-candy. and, even with the graphics all the way up, no lag. EQII goes for a more gritty, realistic look which, while very authentic-looking (inasmuch as a mythical land can be authentic), is an absolute hog. For instance, there are several pre set settings you can have on EQ II.

Extreme quality
Very high quality
high quality
balanced
High performance
very high performance
Extreme performace
custom

Think your machine is badass? Go ahead, put it on extreme quality. My machine was badass, too. Til this dick shrinker was put on extreme quality. I mean, don't get me wrong, it is absolutely stunning the amount of detail SoE crammed into it. it looks awesome, well...the two or three frames I saw looked awesome, anyway.

I like that you can tradeskill anywhere in WoW. In EQII, you gotta either
1. get rich (And I mean rich) and buy yourself a tradeskilling place for your "house" (It's not really a house, more of a hotel room stored serverside)
2. go to your crafter's type hall and toil away.

In EQII, the tradeskilling is deep, complex, difficult, and interdependent on other classes to succeed. in WoW, you kill an animal, skin it, tan the skin, and make some nifty new armor, all before your next fight. all of 30 seconds.

In EQII, when you get jumped by a mob, they'll chase you.

And chase you
and chase you
and chase you
and chase you
Then they'll break the encounter about 5 minutes later.

In WoW, the mobs will break after a pursuit of about 30 seconds.

In EQII, once you get past lvl 10, you better get your ass a group.

In WoW, there are an abundance of soloable mobs to make the game enjoyable for those of us who don't want to group up with some dipstick noob.

So, right now it's looking like WoW is the winner. Are there any tricks of the trade I should tell my brother so he doesn't end up like one of Gimli's kin in Moria? Any particularly good things he should go for in the game?

After playing FFXI for a while, WoW is a nice change, yet constantly pisses me off. I hate the invariably disproportionate character models and I can't get used to the counterintuitive controls that the game won't allow me to remap to gamepad. The battle system also seems so clumsy... On the other hand, I really like the music and general atmosphere, and the system of using quests to gain XP is refreshing compared to grinding in a party.

Is WoW good? Well, lemme put it this way... I've checked out most previous MMORPG's, and I thought they were extremely boring and uninteresting.

Not so with WoW. And as for this...
Why couldn't SWG kick ass *cry*
Because Sony Online Entertainment knew that EQ2 was going to suck both the proverbial and literal donkey dick, so they sabotaged Galaxies in hopes of making more money on EQ.

I'm glad Blizzard came along to sink their ship.

Yeah... Go Horde!
Hell yeah the Horde rocks! Taurens and Trolls all the way!

I'd probably play the game less if I didn't have 8+ alternate characters to fiddle with when my lvl 26 Tauren Hunter has had his adventuring for the day (or if Hellscrem goes down, something I don't recall happening for quite some time now). It's the simple fact that playing the game in of itself is fun that makes me enjoy leveling numerous characters up past lvl 10.

And now I'm off for Azeroth again. Wheee!

played wow at a friends house, then had a choice of buying catacombs or WoW.

Disproportionate compared to what? The wispy little girlmen in FFXI? As for trying to play it on a gamepad...

I disagree. I'm currently playing EQ2 and i'm loving it. SWG was gonna suck no matter what due to the time period it was set in, that and fanboys demanding more than was realistic.

EQ2 looks like a real game and not cartoonesque like WoW plus from the time i've spent on a friends WoW account EQ2 will keep you playing for more than a month which from what i've heard is all it takes to gain a top level toon on WoW. EQ2 may be slow to break into, but already the community is thriving. It's the best MMO i've played since pre AoS UO.

Too true. I currently have a level 34 Undead Mage on Icecrown. I didn't play it for a week or so after it was released; for my play time the servers have only been down at Rediculous in the morning for the length of time Blizzard said they would be, and it's been a lot of fun. Others have covered the basics.

I've heard all types of rave reviews for WoW, from many game review sites and this forum. One thing I haven't heard too much about, though, is the economy. I dunno why, but I'm always interested in the economy of these games and how intricate it is. Maybe it's cuz I'm and econ major...I dunno lol

Anyway, how does the economy work in WoW? Is it pretty robust, based upon PC crafters? Or is it more of a mix of NPC's and PC's? While I don't think SWG is up to where it should be, I think that it's economy is pretty awesome. Just about everything someone buys will be due to the work of another player, as opposed to some NPC. The economy is my favorite part of SWG....does WoW have a comparable one?

To each his own, but I prefer art with a little style. From the EQ2 screenies I've seen, the character models were designed by monkies.
plus from the time i've spent on a friends WoW account EQ2 will keep you playing for more than a month
It certainly will, if you're a masochist. I'm aware of at least one quest in EQ2 that requires you to kill five hundred of a particular monster. Not five, or fifty. Five fucking hundred.
which from what i've heard is all it takes to gain a top level toon on WoW.
Utter bullshit.
EQ2 may be slow to break into, but already the community is thriving. It's the best MMO i've played since pre AoS UO.
EQ2 is just the evil which is Sony Online Entertainment trying to protect their EQ marketshare with a sequel that keeps the same torturous bullshit gameplay and adds shinier graphics. I'd rather play current UO.
