So, I'm up at this morning, checking the board and my other news sites when my computer suddenly shuts down without warning. My first thought was that it was a power outage, but the monitor's power indicator was still on. In addition, the light in the back showed that the CPU was hooked up and receiving power.

Repeated attempts at pushing the power button have ammounted to no effect whatsoever; the cpu will not come to life. So, here I am writing this from my friend's computer

Thoughts? Suggestions? Any help would be appreciated

Seriously though, it almost sounds like your CPU died or something. I'd suggest this: completely shut down your computer. If you have a power bar, shut that off, if not, unplug everything. Then hook it up again and give it a go. I've had some rare instances where my keyboard "died", and a complete shut down and reboot fixed the problem.

Might also want to check your system internals, maybe something came loose inside, or maybe just a power cable, etc. Never hurts to check.

Sounds more like the PSU than the CPU. Could be a power hit. I've had it before.

Is there a switch on the back of the PSU? Did you frob it? How about unplugging it and plugging it back in?

I'm going to have a friend look at it and then if that doesn't work out, down to Circuit City I go. If, as I fear, that the motherboard or CPU has died (which, according to Nostradamus, shouldn't happen for another two years ), then in the immortal words of 1970, "Houston, we have a problem."

If this is the case then, for a while anyway, BOBW will be on hiatus. My apologies, Rob.

Two of my tech friends agreed with you. My Power Supply, from what they found, has indeed died. The fan was the first to go and because I've been so busy as of late, I didn't notice that it was overheating. So, I'm going to have to replace it, but I can't do it for another two days -- sorry Rob.

I told you I'd be back!

Repairs to my system are now complete. The new PSU is running like a charm -- and yes, you guys and my friends correctly diagnosed it -- and with a few either minor repairs and modifications, I'm back in business.

It was a pretty good guess regardless. Speaking from experience as a retail tech, 45-65 percent of problems are spyware/adware/viruses, 10-30 percent are OS damage (overlap caused by spyware/adware/viruses damaging the OS), 10 percent dead power supplies, 10 percent motherboard, and 5 percent 'What the freaking hell?'

So chances are it was a power supply, since it wasn't software.

Needless to say, that last 5 percent are the only time you really get to have FUN
