The gaming industry has more Lord of the Rings games floating around right now than a beach has sand. I would much rather see a follow-up to Dawn of War's success.

I'm not surprised; What I'd like them to do, however, is polish Inquisitor a bit; Make it a proper RPG.
Then again they wouldn't be able to sell figures for that. Hrm.

Last I heard, sadly, is it'll be a one-off thing. So, no armies of Gondor, or the legions of Balrogs from the First Age

Bah. That sucketh. That sucketh with might.

Indeed. an army of Wood elves is not what I want. Proper Eldar, with ass-kicking swords, that's what's required.

Bah. I want to lead the armies of Morgoth, headed by Sauron in his 'giver of gifts' form, with Balrogs as elite units, versus the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth!

Balrogs as elite units? There were only nine balrogs. They were generals, not elites.
Dragons perhaps.
And, to be fair, they always release the box sets with two armies. If it sells well, they will produce more.
Given that they have models of characters that never made it into the film (Glorfindel, Elrohir & Elladan, etc) I think they may have the liscence, but it may not cover the Silmarillion's characters.

Okay, generals. Whatever you say.
I still want 'em.

One of the
History of Middle Earth books, maybe number 11, mentions this. Sometimes, Tolkien decided there were fewer than a dozen, sometimes, there were legions of them.

It's number ten. And it's sitting on my desk as I type. To put it simply, early versions of the Annals of Arda had at least one thousand ("There came balrogs a thousand"). However, back then, they were little more than trolls with flaming whips. Ecthelion killed about five of them in one fight. Later on this was changed to make them far rarer, but also far more potent.

Ah, OK. I read that (and probably still own it), but I kinda lost the will to live halfway through. Still, legions of Orcs led by Balrogs would still be cool
