It's coming...."Hard to Be a God" the game

Post by fgalkin »

Based on the novel of the same name by Strugatsky brothers, this non-linear 3D RPG features a branching story with four endings in this tale of the Kingdom of Arkanar. One of the gameplay features is the interference of two epochs in the game universe – the medieval and the alternative future. This provides the peculiar variety of different weapons and armors - from swords and bows to miniguns, from full plates to force fields - and equipment like binoculars and night vision goggles at characters’ disposal. The active combat system also includes a party system and damage modeling on the hero where the character can be wounded badly which will diminish his attributes and require long recover, and even lose a limb or be decapitated by a strong attack of the opponent. The whole world from the book is being carefully created anew under the supervision of one of its demiurges, Boris Natanovich Strugatsky.

More info on the game:
The "Hard to be a God" game will be a thoroughbred role-playing game affirming all the best traditions of the genre. The storyline is non-linear presenting several story branches with 4 endings depending on the main character's in-game behavior.

The game utilizes a 3D-engine with free rotating camera. Wounds, weapons, armor and different equipment are shown on the characters' models.

One of the gameplay features is the interference of two epochs in the game universe - the medieval and the alternative future. This provides the peculiar variety of different weapons and armors - from swords and bows to miniguns, from full plates to force fields - and equipment like binoculars and night vision goggles at characters' disposal. The standard RPG equipment "doll" is amplified with slots for sword shoulder-belts and hidden weapon scabbards on wrists and arms.

The combat system features many different combos and special attacks (stunning, disarming, etc.) provided by some abilities and special weapon types. During a battle the character can be wounded badly which will diminish his attributes and require long recover, and even lose a limb or be decapitated by a strong attack of the opponent.

A player controls only the main character. The rest of the party is managed by orders. The volunteers traveling with the main character can obey or disobey orders depending on the form the order was given in (strict order, persuasion, intimidation, etc.), while the mercenaries will obey any order given in the proper form.

The Kingdom of Arkanar is divided into many locations. The party will travel between the locations using Arcanum-styled global map. The movement speed will be influenced with the world relief. The party can also ride mounts to move faster. The new locations can be revealed from dialogues with NPCs.

The trading mechanism features selling and buying items for different currencies (universal currency, irukanian gold and so on) or bartering them if both sides are satisfied with the offer.

One of the most prominent features of the game is of course the true spirit of the Strugatskys' novel. The game universe, the dark medieval atmosphere, the key figures from the novel, the Kingdom of Arkanar, - the whole world from the book is being carefully created anew under the supervision of one of its demiurges, Boris Natanovich Strugatsky.

The great variety of social strata typical to medieval age provides another game feature which can be called "the true role playing". Depending on a situation or an environment, a character can choose a role to play, pretending to be a noble man or a mere citizen or a member of some guild. This allows him to gain trust of NPCs with different alignments. A player can create several legends for each role of his character. The character will introduce himself with this legend to NPCs. If the truth behind the legend is revealed, the player can make up another legend reading books and talking to other NPCs.

The corrupted bureaucrats of Arkanar are easily bribed. This provides one more way of completing the game. For example if you need some papers to pass you may bribe the guard who demands the papers. A character can also buy the forged papers or make them by himself if he has proper skills.

Many gameplay elements and features are being discussed by the developers' team and Boris Natanovich Strugatsky now. The information on all new features and other details concerning the "Hard to be a God" game will follow in our future press-releases.

Awesome! This will be the first PRG I'm actually intersted in. And if it becomes popular, maybe another translation of the book will come out, or, if we're very lucky, a movie will be made! "Hard to Be a God": the Movie....*drools*

Have a very nice day.

This. Is. Such. A. Bad. Idea.

Play Fallout, and then play Baldur's Gate. There's a reason they switched to direct control. It's not worth the hassle, and the AI just isn't good enough. I found Arcanum almost unplayable because they insisted on removing all the little conveniences that were present in contemporary black isle games.

But this fits in closely with the universe. You are alone. The members of the group are not your friends. They are merely tools to be used. Or at least, they should be. In the novel, Rumata got himself some friends (and fell in love with one) of the locals. And that's what caused him to fuck up so badly.

Have a very nice day.

Since I realize most of you have no clue what the story is about, let me explain. Think SC, changing primitive planets to suit the Culture. The socialist utopia of the 22nd century tries to do the same thing, change planets so that they become Marxist. However, unlike the Culture, the commie Earthlings have both inferior technology and a flawed theory. Meaning that their interference produces...interesting results for both the low-tech planet in question and the socialist utopia itself.

Hard to be a God (which is one of my favorite books ever, btw) tells the story of one such fuckup. Earth has sent the "progressors" to a medieval-tech world. Coming from a utopian society where all violence is eradicated, and armed with only their theory for progress (and some not-so high tech gadgets) they try to reform the medival society from within. The result of one such attempted change, in the Kingdom of Arkanar is described in the novel.

Have a very nice day.

So you play an Earth-esque Special Circumstances agent. It gets my vote. Thought this was going to be about Black & White.

But this fits in closely with the universe. <snip>
The issue is not the concept, but the execution. It's possible today that things have improved somewhat, but from what minute knowledge I have on the matter I'm tempted to say that it likely won't be enough. It's the difference between telling someone to come help you and the AI saying "Nope! Gonna go get some easy kills instead," and the AI turning around and walking repeatedly into a wall.

Since I'm no expert on RPGs , I'll take your word for it. Still, I hope they find a way around it.

Yeah...game called Master of Orion 3 tried the 'Intelligent AIs that have their own agendas' bit. Problem is, the AIs were freaking RETARDED unless you spoon-fed them directions in the most obtuse, unintuitive ways imaginable. BAD idea.

Well, I expect most of the commands to be on the level of "fight this guy" or "go there." Everything else is too important to trust to your companions.

Have a very nice day.

It depends for a start on your party size. Baldur's Gate is a poor example, because you have five other people trailing around with you, and that will tend to impose limits on how creative each one can get.

In Knights of the Old Republic, though, I generally found that I could ignore what my other characters were doing, because it would generally involve killing things, and I only occasionally had to tell them to kill particular things.

Of course, there's room for expansion and improvement, it would be nice to see AIs that have some understanding of their abilities and when it's most appropriate to use them, rather than just chucking stuff out at random (and that goes for enemies as well). It will be nice to see how Jade Empire deals with the AI controlled companions.
