Something happend to my tower. I started it up and it gives me a screen that reads something like:
"the fallowing file is corrupt or is missing:
Windows\system\config\system."
Then it tells me to put in the XP disk and hit 'R' to try and fix it. When I do, it takes me to what seems to be a DOS screen and asks which drive. I only have one, so I pick the C drive. Now I don't know what to do to repair the problem. I don't want to loose my files, can anyone help?

Try to boot in failsafe mode Press F8 just before windows begins to start and see what hapens.
If that work try a repair install, just boot on the cd and choose repair.
If you want to be safe then move the harddrive to an other system and copy the files you want to keep out of the drive

BSOD's are normally down to a memory fault. Is there any software you've recently installed? Installed new hardware (particulary ram) recently?

As for the recovery console, once you have the command prompt up, type
CHKDSK /R
Doesn't always fix things, but it sometimes can. Worth a shot at any rate.

Ya, I did. I just put in a 128mb stick of RAM. I haven't gotten around to trying to fix it but thanks for the site, I'll try it out tonight.
