Europa Universalis II

Post by irishmick79 »

Anybody play this monster still? I just fired up a campaign as Muscovy, and they start out as a vassal of the Golden Horde. Initially, Muscovy is completely inferior to the Horde in every way, and would get crushed if they challenged the horde directly. Fortunately, I've been able to pick off a few principalities here and there, notably Tver and Novgorod. I kicked the shit out of Novgorod when they foolishly declared war on me, and I snagged some nice provinces from them (notably the area where St. Petersburg will be built). One of the unfortunate things about being a vassal is limited diplomatic functions - I sacked every single province Novgorod posessed, but still couldn't demand their vassalization at the peace table. I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but it kind of sucks. I've effectively tripled Muscovy in land size, and I'm getting ready to take on some stronger principalities like Lithuania and Sweden.

The Golden Horde is starting to camp some stronger armies on my frontier, which sucks. I'm not strong enough that I can leave a huge garrison while my armies pillage the west.

I've got a couple of options - I can keep the military campaign going and take on a foe more to my equal, or I can sit back and develop the economy a bit and restock the treasury. Decisions, decisions......

Europa Universalis II is a game with some extreme longevity. I play it, too.

In a Muscowy game, you can usually cancel your vassalization right off the bat and the Golden Horde won't do much (unless you're playing on a high AI aggressiveness level) because they have troubles of their own. After that, you can start gobbling up Russian minors by whatever means necessary.

My favorite country to play as, though, is definitely France. It's like bringing a gun to a knife-fight. Whee!

I downloaded the Mongol Empire Scenario mod and I'm playing as Byzantium in 1300, wrote some events, and I've taken Rome and all lands south including Sicily. I need to decide where to go however - Hungary is allied to the Germans though I improved my quality so I could win, but the provinces are Catholic, Hungarian, and already cheap. So I'm thinking I take out Venice hasn't expanded yet except fpr Marche; since the German Kingdom's vassal 'd get my war. I could go to Spain and destroy the Moslems and the Reconquesta, everyone has good provinces over there. Meanwhile, I'm improving my infra as should about 96% of my tech is in that. Any ideas?

My favorite nations in EUII is France, Sweden the Mighty, and Prussia. My last game as France I DA a massive Venice, raped Austria-Hungary reduced the Netherlands to nothingness, pushed Spain to Barcelona, completely crossed the Rhine. Though that I spent virtually all my money on the colonies and economy then started cracking skulls. Sweden is just a great quality nation and has its own grandeur and quantity in that quality. If you can push Russia back, it is dissembling various nations pushing ever southwards. Prussia is simply the land warfare experiment, I enjoy becoming the premier Central Power in 100 years.

I just bought this game for £8 on ebay - I'll post my first experiences of it here when it is delivered. :)

My most successful EUII game was when I played Byzantium in AGC-EEP mod, and restored the Empire to it's Justinian-era borders, plus much of North America. Sadly, by the mid-1700's my tech level had fallen well behind most of Europe and I had my hands full just keeping France and England and the super-enormous Austria off my goods.

Make sure you download the latest patch from www.paradoxplaza.com.

The "Beta" patches posted in the forum are also VERY good.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.
