I got this over the holidays and I have to say they did a pretty good job remaking it. However, I have to ask, did the original game have a headstone marked "Here Lies Link" in Elfheim?

No, I believe it was Erdrick (the main character in Dragon Quest)

It was Erdrick...even with the I believe the Engrish spelling of Erdric.
Still the Link bit came from the Wonderswan version of FF1 remake.
