AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)—Nov. 4, 2004

Game Developer Critical Mass Interactive (CMI) has recently completed work on USAF: AIR DOMINANCE, a Government funded promotional game intended to raise awareness and perpetuate the high-tech image of the Air Force. CMI, which has been a part of major releases like the 2003 "Favorite Video Game" Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award winner "SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman" for PlayStation®2 and GameCube, completed the project in three short months and is eagerly anticipating additional upgrades to the project.

"Based on the success of other ‘serious’ games, America’s Army in particular, we are really excited to see how the public will react to our incarnation," said CMI VP of Development Billy Cain. "From the very beginning, it was our intent to both create a compelling experience while maintaining the educational value of the product."

In USAF: AIR DOMINANCE, the player must complete three specific missions: saving a pilot from an allied nation, delivering supplies inside hostile territory, and completing a covert surveillance raid. Each mission is meant to provide the player with a varied perspective of many of the different responsibilities associated with the United States Air Force.

The USAF is called upon to resolve matters and disputes in foreign nations. “One of the goals of the project for us was to help break certain stereotypes associated with the US military,” explained CMI’s project Producer Tom Ashley. “In one mission in particular, the player is called upon to deliver supplies to innocent bystanders caught in between a Civil War. The player has no weaponry available to use, and must rely on evasive maneuvers to deliver the supplies intact.”

A new gaming genre, called “serious games,” has recently emerged and is becoming more important for entities that present games as learning experiences rather than just for entertainment purposes. Recently, Critical Mass Interactive attended the inaugural “Serious Games Summit” held on October 18-19 in Washington D.C. “It was incredible to see the number of people interested in learning how to turn games into teaching tools,” says Cain. “The show completely sold out and was by all accounts a huge success. We are proud to be on the forefront of this new genre.”

USAF: AIR DOMINANCE follows in the footsteps of another incredibly successful military serious game, America’s Army. America’s Army was released to the general public in August 2002, focusing on the details and specifics of being in the Army. Since the release of America’s Army, there are over four million registered players across the world, and thousands of individuals have flocked to recruitment centers in order to join the service. “While no one has yet quantified how many individuals have joined the Army because of [America’s Army], it is hard to ignore the fact that recruitment is on the rise since the release of the game,” added Cain.

USAF: AIR DOMINANCE is scheduled to go on tour across the nation this winter.

Critical Mass Interactive delivers a wide variety of services, including full game production from concept to completion, concept sketches and storyboards, models for in-game or marketing materials, design documents, motion capture planning and direction, audio production, and more. Three months? I'm skeptical. I was hoping for something on par with AA... I really hope the Air Force hasn't made a complete ass of itself with this.

Oh look - we drop supplies without a fighter escort. I can see it now. "Excuse me Mr. Rumsfeld but what happens should our planes come under enemy attack while delivering supplies into a warzone?"

"Well they can dodge can't they? What you don't understand is that you go into a supply drop with the planes that have no weapons not the planes with weapons."

Sounds pretty crappy - particulalrly when one of your claims to fame is a Spongebob Squarepants game.

We do that all the time.

And the game is gonna be small, or limited scope, and free, so what did you people expect?

What they should have done is stolen America's Army, and reconfigured it into a game in which you play USAF base security and kick the crap out enemy commandos parachuting in, with the caveat that you can't allow any damage to the fifteen billion dollars worth of C-17's and E-3's parked on the ramp.

Well some of the games on that list is quite good, but some of those I have never heard of like BioForge, Madden, Quarterback Club and SpongeBob SquarePants Guess those are new games because I am not as up to date in the gaming area as I used to be.

A10 Tank Killer
BioForge
Civilization
Crusaders of Might and Magic
F-15 Strike Eagle
Flight Unlimited
Freelancer
Heavy Gear
Jane’s Combat Simulations
Madden
Mechwarrior
Privateer
Quarterback Club
SpongeBob SquarePants
Tribes
Turok
Ultima
Wing Commander

Anyways it will be free so I'll D/L and try it out when it arrives.

Wow... America's Army folks worked a solid year first visting multiple sites, playing with acutal weaponry and watch/attending various Army schools, hired half a dozen acutal combat vetrans then went and started coded

And the Air force picked guys who could make them a game in three months with no support :P

That would be sweet. You could maybe also include other more realisitc missions such as unclogging a paper jam in the squadron's printer, doing a FOD walk, and watching someone taking their piss test to keep the from cheating.

Actually, didn't they also do the rest of those shitty Nickelodian games that they were showing commercials for on the television like the world was about to end?

Someone must have kissed a lot of ass and done plenty of favors to get that contract.

That would actually be more realistic from the recruiting point of view. Since generally speaking you don't normally get to pilot aircraft without a college degree (so, in order to be realistic, will their "tutorial" be four years of college courses? :P It's an educational game now!). But I suppose most people won't realize that.

In the case of AA, that is not true. That game is amazing. The classes that you have to take to get certified in different aspects of soldiering are straight from the field manuals. In fact, the teachers there used some of the verbiage I've heard time and time and time and time and time again. I seriously almost fell asleep during one of the certification classes, so realistic was it! Just like I did when I was in the Army *sniff* Good times, man....good times...

EDIT________________

Buggy piece of crap game that it was upon release.

You never heard of BIOFORGE? That game fucking ruled. Though I don't see what these people have to do with it, it was an Origin game.

Anyway, this game looks like shit. LO:MAC forever.

Ah, fuck. I kept telling my friends that plan to join the Army that eventually the Air Force would make its own version of America's Army.

God, why did I have to be telling the truth?

The thing is, when America's Army was released, there were few, if any, realistic ground-combat FPS games out there, so there was little competition in the game's niche. On the other hand, they've been making flight simulators as realistic as the technology would allow for pretty much the entire history of computer gaming, which have set the bar incredibly high.

I wonder what the Navy would do with one of these...

"CONGRATULATIONS! You have single-handedly swabbed every deck on the USS NIMITZ! 100 points (99 point deduction for taxes, making the Chief happy, etc.) earned!"

Oh believe me they have not. Even the most in depth complicated flight sim is a walk in the part compared to a real plane. Just trying to start engines on a sim with all the buttons modeled will have you screaming in pain.
