Need game suggestions (old games)

I just got a 300 MHz laptop and I need some suggestions for some good games I can install on it. No 3d card, so take that into account.

Anyway I already have the likes of Half-Life, Myth/Myth 2, Starship Troopers, and X-Com. But those are limited choices and some other game suggestions would be nice.

If you can get ahold of Crimsonland and it doesn't require a 3d card, that's hours upon hours of fun.

Alpha Centauri, Civilization II, Red Alert I ...

Ah yes, I already have C&C Gold and RA1.

Does Westwood Chat for those two games even work anymore?

MAX, assuming you can get it to work.
You mentioned X-Com. The original or one of those crappy sequels? If NOT the original, there's Windows compatible versions of UFO Defense and Terror from The Deep available for free and legally.
Might & Magic 6 & 7
The IE games
Jagged Alliance 2
Rebellion
DF2 JK
System Shock 2
MechCommander Gold, maybe MC2 (may be beyond your machine)
Harpoon Classic
Just for starters.

The original GTA, either the download (if you can get it to work) or the CD (if you can find it).

That's good for some mindless fun and/or venting when there's nothing else to do.

MC2 is so far beyond a 300mhz laptop it's not even funny

If you're into strategy, grab Emperor of the Fading Suns. It's got one helluva learning curve sometimes, but it's highly spiffy. Call me crazy, but I think Might and Magic 3, 4, and 5 beat 6 and 7 any day of the week, so you might want to give those a look. Abuse is fun for a basic action-style game if your tastes run that way, and of course the first two Master of Orion games. Star Control 2 is always an excellent choice for the old-school, as well as its spiritual predecessor, Starflight, IF you can find it.

Warcraft II should work on that (it runs just fine on my 233 MHz desktop). Same goes for Starcraft.

The Quest For Glory Anthology or whatever the collection is called these days. Assuming you can get your hands on it (although your laptop is probably a little too advanced for it, as my old desktop is, and you might need to employ a few tricks or whatnot to fully be able to play the games).

Master of Orion 2 should run.

I have X-Com 98 update (its a free and legal download)

Does the SC2 release work on PC? Well I already have it.

I have System Shock 2.

I am going to have to see if Ground Control worked without a 3d card.

Total Annihilation would run fine on a rig like that. But thats more of a multiplayer game than a single player game.

Unless you are going for obscene levels of destruction and want to find the point were the kill count for a unit rolls over (+64k IIRC)

Nope. TA will run fine with 64mb of ram, just dont play on the ultra large maps with zillions of features.

The game scales really well. I used to play TA well enough on a 200mhz computer with 32mb and then upgraded to 64mb of ram. It loads slowly however.

If you can find a copy, Mechwarrior 2 is always fun. Don't know how well a laptop will handle it.

I know TA runs well on 64 megs of ram. I also know it runs well on 32 megs of ram, and I even had a friend run it on 16. Thing is, I like playing against BAI with a friend over the internet. BAI likes to build a LOT of units.

X-wing? TIE Fighter?

X-Wing (and addons), Tie-Fighter (and addons), X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter (and BoP), and X-Wing Collectors series (full X-Wing and Tie-Fighter made to run in windows 95/98 with 3d graphics, and XvT with BoP).

Already got those. Though flight sims are a little less mobile, what with the joystick and all.

Space Empires 4: Gold

Massively moddable, playable on any system above 486 with more than 32 MB of ram. One of the best 4X games ever made, IMO.

Nothing like conquering the galaxy in your spare time.

This is the official SE4 site, BTW -- though how could I have overlooked it? Bah.

Yeah, but better to link to Shrapnel, since they publish lots of good, low-spec games like the kind requested. ;)

RPG and Strategy games mostly, but hey.

We should start up another SE4 PBEM.

Alyeska, how about Duke Nukem 3D?

It does, or I recall it having a Software mode.

$45 dollars for a 5-year-old game? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for supporting small developers and the like, but eeeeggghh... :|

I remember running it alright on a Pentium 133. A 300 is more than sufficient.

And yet, despite that, it's a better deal than MoO3 from a bargain bin. :P

Space Empires 5 is in development, but it will be 3D and such, so it will not be that nice to older systems.
