Differences between COunter Strike and Death Match
My mate finally got mHL2 and prefers CS to DM, so i'm going to start playing CS.
Can anyone tell me the main differences between CS and DM so that when i play it for the very first time i don't completely suck donkey balls?

Counter-strike is well... counter-strike. It has it's own stupid little targeting theorum, it's own host of similar but unremarkably different weapons and a loose set of instructions beyond "kill people" for each level.
Deathmatch is just what it sounds like, Deathmatch. In the case of HL2:DM, it is people running around (Team or Not) killing each other with weapons and objects they've found in the map. It's fast paced, generally one doesn't live very long is rather fun. If you wanted a chance to kill other players with your gravity gun - Now is your chance

I'd disagree, the weapons are very differant, and if you can find a good group of players, you can have very rewarding tactical matchs.InnocentBystander wrote:Counter-strike is well... counter-strike. Counter Strike, for now, still has several bugs, though. Twice it happened to me, once yesterday (11th Jan), to KILL a guy on the other side of the door/wall. Headshot too. I was just shooting at the door, trying to buy some time for other teammates to get to my position, when, out of the blue, I heard the distinctive sound of a headshot. I looked at the upper-right side of the monitor, and there it was: the Terrorist got a Headshot from me. And he was crouched AWAY from the open doorway... The other time was also a headshot, though I was behind a crate and the guy was a bit far away from me. I know the accuracy of the CV-47 isn't THAT good, but please...
The first happened in the Aztec map and the second in the Italy map. Play at will, but don't be surprised if you see everyone doing headshots. I myself make them without knowing how
Oh, and as far as I know, there isn't any wallhack... Though the speedhack is out there and common Once, for three rounds, a guy from my team killed all the CTs in less than 10 seconds

My biggest beef is WHY did they have to change the perfectly fine names of the weapons?
Anyway, CS and CS:S are only good if you have some relatively competent players who aren't a bunch of tards. Also it's round-based, so if you don't like waiting a few minutes while the two remaining players each camp at opposite ends of the map and otherwise do nothing---with happens sometimes---then CS may not be for you.
NS is a better team-oriented game, imo. Much better.
For deathmatch, on a Half-Life mod, nothing beats The Specialists. NOTHING. You can cite bunches of other HL mods that involve some kind of deathmatch, and none of them even hope to come even an inch close to the kind of extremely fast-paced, skill-heavy fragfest that TS offers. Bar none.

From what I understand, since now CS is a game that must be bought, trademarks(or is it copyrights?) come into play, if they wanted to sell a game beering those name, they would have to pay the manufacturs of those weapons the copyright name.Shinova wrote:My biggest beef is WHY did they have to change the perfectly fine names of the weapons?
Now for smaller games(those with less 'splash'), this wouldn't be a problem, they wouldn't be sued, Valve could be.

As for your question
Deathmatch is... Deathmatch, shoot everything you see and you'll do fine, Counterstrike is a little more ceberal, for advice, follow a teammate with a shotgun/smg and you'll do fine, learn the maps following the paths the other players take

Counter-Strike is basically team-deathmatch with a few quirks:
1) No respawn
You don't respawn immediately after death; rather, you wait until one team or the other wins, or until the time for the round runs out.
2) Objectives
Each map has an objective - for example, some hostages may need to be rescued or a bomb may need to be planted. Generally, elimination of the other team will also suffice, although if the bomb has been planted the Counter-Terrorists still need to defuse the bomb even if all the Terrorists are dead. If the objective is completed (and/or the other team is eliminated), your team wins the match, which leads me to...
3) Money
You gain money for killing your opponents and rescuing hostages. You also get money at the beginning of each round - how much depends on whether last round your team won, lost, or is on a major losing streak. You buy your weapons and ammunition with this money. If you stay alive, your weapons carry over. If you die, you have to replace your weapons. People drop their weapons when they die, and you can take them for yourself if you wish.
You can also lose money for killing hostages.
---
Also keep in mind that headshots pay off very nicely in CS.

As of now, there are Confirmed problems with the hitboxs that result in a far greater number of Headshots then supposed to be, but the headshot thing is a featureMr Bean wrote: Whats that? Physics? Main problem with CS now is the widespread suttering bug, and some netcode issues.

Thanks all for the info on CS, and for the record i had been playing DM for a while before, maybe i should have pointed that out in the OP.

It deserves the fucking support it gets.weemadando wrote:I would say to you FIND ANOTHER GAME TO PLAY THAT ISN'T COUNTERSTRIKE.
Because that game has faaaaar too much of a following already - for fucks sake - SUPPORT A GAME THAT DESERVES THE SUPPORT!
Once you get a good session going, it is, by far, god.
I dare you to find a well oiled team, work a good match, and tell me it wasn't awesome, I dare you.

NS is a better team-oriented game than CS. Find both games a competent team, and you'll see better team-action in NS simply cause it's better geared toward team games.

However, some people don't like the concept of NS.Shinova wrote:

And some just want a quick game, jump in, within 3 seconds you got 50 servers, pick 1 under 25 ping, jump in and play within minutes, rounds are fast and fun.
But its really 2 differant gaming philosophies.

The second case was indeed with 7.62mm (even though, from what I've been hearing from Clans, mostly along with reporst about wallhacks , is that bullets were not supposed to go through walls. However, it's not official so I don't really know whether CS: Source has that particularity). However, the first case was with the HK USP .40 ( not sure about the caliber being .40 or .45)(the standard handgun for the CTs). To pass through a thick door? Well, beats me if I know. I've seen guys shooting at walls, so I might very well be wrong...Mr Bean wrote:Whats that? Physics? Apart from hearing a lot of complaints about the way the game works online, I can't really specify a bug.
Oh, and I second Shinova: best stick with the servers belonging to Clans, you'll find a real challenge with them. Avoid the public servers, most cheaters and n00bs appear there...
And before I forget, don't kill a hostage, 2000AD. If you're CT you'll lose around 3000$. If you're a T, then you'll lose over 1000$.

Well, whether some people like or don't like NS's concept isn't quite the issue here.
And Specialists' greatness just can't be emphasized enough.

I can't echo Ando enough. It's a reasonably fun game if you treat it like the team arcade deathmatch it is, but if you're looking for a real team tactical game, play AA, or DoD for HL2 when it get Sourceage.

CS *STILL* has bugs? Isn't it like... 7 years old? Fuck.
No 1 tip for CS - follow everyone else, at the BACK of the group. Everyone will (on pub servers) run through one of two chokepoints in any map, get mown down, then spam you with 'hurry up and die' while you take advantage of the decimation of the enemy team to plant your bombs or whatever. Happens every time, even round after round after round.
Until you know the maps and can snipe people through DSP errors and tiny tiny holes in tables/crates. Then you will get kicked all the time for 'OMG hax hax hx wtf???'.
EDIT - If TS goes source, it better fix the gayness of 2.1. Irritatingly it had a lot of great fixes and additions... and their new 'super crap' recoil code, a raft of 'wow gay' weapon nerfs, etc. Its a shame whatever guys made it originally left, really: its my favourite HL game ever.

And yes, CS still has bugs, thats what happens when you port a game from the HL1 engine to Source, and try to improve it at the same time, all games have bugs, and its age has nothing to do with it.

I won't comment on recoil, since its a preference, but weapon balancing gay??
Desert Eagle is no longer a spam-cannon. Raging Bull and Barret have firing rate limits and can't be auto-spammed. The MAC10, most unbalanced gun in 2.0, removed. AK47 no longer as unbalancing by increasing recoil.
I don't see why nerfing unbalanced weapons is bad.
