Just started, weird noise, kinda like a shaving noise, but alot shorter, like 1 second.

Very worrying :?

Is it a sign of the drive heads touching the platters?

BACKUP ALL INPORTAINT DATA NOW!

That disk is dying! Heard that many times and it is never a good sign!

Reminds me of a picture I saw on HardOCP once, of a set of HDD platters that had been polished by the drive's own heads until they were TRANSPARENT. Back that shit up, Ace.

Okey, backing up my essential stuff thankfully most is on other CD's allready. The sound stopped for now, is that normal?

EDIT: this is fucking shit, 2 weeks till new PC, I wanted to transfare this drive there, copy all the stuff, and now its dieing?!

Still has high probability of dying. Noises stopping can be just as bad, given you heard the intial bit.

Can be bad or nothing to worry about, though its always best to be cautious.

One of my drives has been making odd noises every now and again for over 2 years. Still works perfectly. I'm still careful though.

5 discs later, drive backed up.

Now assuming the drive lives out for 3 weeks, would it be safe to transfare it to my new PC, copy everything quick and dirty? or would the shock of moving it complicate matters?

Geting a whole new comp?

Use FTP, IMO it is the best way to transfer files.

Filezilla has a free client and server. Just install the server on one com and the client on the other.
