Problems with notepad

I'm having issues with notepad.
If I launch it from a (personally) created shortcut in the start menu it works fine. But if I doubleclick a txt file or use the open with or if something tries to autolaunch it, it just doesn't happen.
Any solutions?

Some other app has stolen the *.txt extension.
To fix this do this.
Start Explorer
Click Tools
Click Folder Options
Click The File Types Tab
Scroll down to the TXT extension
Click Change
Choose Notepad

I'm having this same issue but notepad is no longer in the list and if I browse to it it doesn't retain it as a choice even though the box is checked to always use it. Any suggestions?

Thats not the problem (though thanks for the help Faram).
I do that, but Notepad.exe is listed, but the icon is missing and when I reassociate, it still doesn't work.
The problem is that somewhere in windows, Notepad has gotten lost.

Jcow, chances are you had a virus that infected notepad.exe and was deleted by AV software. For some reason, several viruses love to hole up in that file, I've yet to figure out why. I recommend reassociating to Wordpad, to both of you. See if that works. Even if it doesn't, it still tells you something.

Ok...I got it fixed. I guess after the virus that screwed my notepad.exe got cleaned it left a notepad.exe that windows just didn't like. File size was all screwy. Go to this website and download their copy of notepad.exe and replace the notepad.exe in your C:\windows\ folder.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/winf ... ml#notepad (I'm assuming your on windows XP)
After that I was able to reassociate .txt files just fine. And notepad appeared in the "open with" window as well.
