This is the link on the official website. It doesn't seem to work yet so it might be an idea to look for mirrors.

No, download 1.2, and if you backed up your original data folder, put it back in or reinstall.
1.2 includes 1.1 in it.
SPQR and RTR are not updated as of time of writing to 1.2.

So download 1.2, then put the original data folder back and get rid of the old one?

Wrong order, put original folder back in, install 1.2 and enjoy.

I've been testing it. The "No time limit for campaign battles" option is fucking awesome. I always hated the way I would use up half of the time limit taking the walls, and then I'd have to make my men run all the way to the city square so they'd get there before the time ran out. By the time they got there they would be tired out and would fight at a fraction of their normal combat effectiveness.

Worse yet, I had battles where I had control of the city square, I owned the walls, I'd wiped out almost all of his forces and there was literally just one or two fucking enemy horses that survived, but they were running away and I couldn't chase them down in time to beat the clock, so the fucking computer "won" that engagement! ARRRRRGHH!!!

Now that's no longer the case; if the computer's going to win a battle, he's going to have to beat me fair and square, not by running away until the time runs out.

I also noticed that you can only sally out once per turn now, so no more "run out with archers, shower them with arrows, run back in, rinse, repeat" multiple sallies per turn in order to wear down a besieging army.

Cavalry is tougher now; it used to be that the initial charge was dangerous but once they plowed into your men, you'd be able to easily kill half of them before they could extricate themselves for another charge, and they would be lucky to kill one or two extra men. Now, while they're still obviously far less dangerous after the charge than during the charge, they are less likely to lose half of their horses before you can pull them out.

And last but not least, they finally fixed the friendly-fire problem. Friendly fire still takes place, but at least your men aren't fucking idiots, firing directly into the backs of men standing in front of them.

Some new features that I really love:

-The AI now actually bloackades my ports. Its more important than ever now to have naval superiority. Before, I was never worried about the AI navies because they never bothered to do anything. Now, I have have ports being blockaded by every damn faction that has any naval power in my area. In addition, what else I love is no more mini stacks of navies! The AI will actually combine their navies into fleets and not only that, they will perform amphibious assaults! I was playing my Carthaginian game and had several waves of Brutii and Scipii land off of Messana.

-I absolutely love the additions to the battle map backgrounds. Its so much more imerssive now, to see fleets in the background, oceans, rivers, villas, grain fields, moutains. This is how the original should've been. Very awesome.

-The AI actaully follows up on attacks that you withdraw from now!! I had a small stack of troops get attacked by a Senate legion and I withdrew and then suddenly, the Senate followed up on it with another attack and wiped my small army out!! (I auto calced)

-The game loads up sooo much faster now. I'm lovin it.

-Bribe costs has increased substantially. A Rebel army of about 5 stacks with a family member cost me about 5000 denarii.

-Rebel armies pose a threat to my cities now. They wandered around my Charthage province while I cowered behind my walls since I was close to broke and then they besieged me! My armies were away so I had to quickly pull in reinforcements from Sciliy.

-I can actually get map information now without resorting to huge payments of money!!!

-I don't seem to be getting retinues as much now, which is a plus for me. Before, I was getting so many generic retinues that it was really annoying.

Those are just some of the most noticeables things. I think this patch will keep me going for quite a while. As soon as I finish my Carthage game, I'm gonna head back to a Julii game, which will now truly test my metltle in this game.

The no-timelimit feature has been availible as a hack for some time: using the multi-sally exploit I could kill thousands of enemy by encouraging them to walk AROUND my walls, over and over, getting shot to bits by the Magic Wall Archers. I'm glad they fixed it :)

I wonder if they fixed the 'falling off walls/bridges' issue, and put more of the scripting into the text files to help modding. Vanilla is so flat; maybe it'll be worth playing again.

Read the readme, they fixed bridge issues.

Grey, there are dozens of mirrors.

Try the German site, rometotalwar.de (if that doesn't work, in a pinch I can make a copy available myself, but the main download sites should calm down in a day or two).

The friendly-fire thing is a biggie for me. I always liked using a formation where you have infantry in front and archers behind, and you always had to micromanage the hell out of every battle because when the enemy charged your front line, your archers would promptly try to shoot through the line of men in front of them in order to hit the enemy. Fucking stupid, and your casualties would promptly skyrocket due to friendly fire unless you carefully instructed your archers to switch targets to enemy units which were farther away.

Now, they automatically do the switch themselves, thus cutting down on the need to keep pausing the game and telling your archers not to shoot your own men in the back. Also, legionaires throwing pila were always a hazard for killing each other if you had several groups overlapping, but that doesn't seem to happen very much now.

The whole diplomacy engine appears to have been massively improved as well, and the missions seem to make more sense. Also, the game's graphical performance issues with flaming arrows seem to have been solved. There were some hacks out for 1.1 which aimed to do the same thing, but they seem to be unnecessary now.

I fucking can't wait to try out the patch tonight. Downloaded this sucker late last night, fought the temptation to play 'juat a little bit' for fear I would see the sun streaming through my windows the next time I looked up.

Oh well, guess I'll be out of touch this weekend. :D

By the way, as advertised, it takes longer to get the Marius reforms. I'm playing a new campaign as the House of Scipii (my favourite Roman faction because the Temple of Vulcan rocks and you're not as dirt-poor as the House of Julii, but you're not as filthy rich as the Brutii so there's still some challenge), and I already have 3 huge cities, but the Marius reforms still haven't kicked in.

Yes, I played the game immediately upon getting the update. Went to bed at 2:00am. Feeling kind of tired today.

They fixed diplomacy? Does that mean you can actually get allies or protectorates now? Is bribing still the ultimate weapon? The servers must be busy; its going to take me ages to download it. I hadn't even played in months...

Have they included a "military access" treaty option? Because whenever I crossed through Dacia on my way to stomp some Germans or Thracians the Senate was always bitching at me to get a military access treaty, but there was never an option to do so.

To get military access, you first have to propose an alliance in the diplomacy screen. Once that happens, the military access option will appear. However, it is a little difficult to secure a military treaty.
