4 Player Console Fun

I have a fairly simple question. What can you all recomend, for pretty much any console but the x-box (there are 4 of us living in my houe, between us we have or want to get almost everything else since the master system), that is simply fun for 4 players.

Nothing serious, or that takes too long to get into, more along the lines of mario-kart, smash brothers melee or monkey ball.

Do I need to mention Goldeneye and Perfect Dark for the N64? :D

Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube is a good hybrid console action/RPG, allowing for 4 player-controlled team in battles, great as long as you don't mind having a single person at a time in the "captain's seat" for navigation.

Godzilla on GC is a bit of phun in 4 player (although eventually frustrating). I like smash bros, but if one of you knows how to play its very frustrating for everyone else. Isn't FZero GX 4 player? THAT game kicks ASS.

Super Smash Bros Melee, all the way. That's definitely the best 4-player party game of all time.

There's also Mario Kart: Double Dash for GC. I believe it even has online play.

And Zelda: Four Swords is awesome. I would say it's even more fun than Super Smash Bros Melee, but I wouldn't say its the best simply because it's ridiculously expensive to play four players: with two or more people, you need:
A) A GameCube
B) The game (duh)
C) Four GBAs
D) Four link cables

If you have the equipment though, it rocks.

Smash Bros. is the king of party games. Hands down, you cannot have more fun with four guys and a console than you can with SSB and Melee.

Sure you can: HALO, an all night supply of caffiene, and plenty of Hungry Howies. You will emerge having had lots of fun and bleeding at the eyes.

Of course for the most addicting multiplayer: SoulCaliber. It's only two player but you can literally not put down that controller with out serious effort once you get going.

I won't pretend to understand why you don't want an Xbox, but whatever.

Power Stone 2 on the almighty Dreamcast is an awesome fighting game. 4 players running around on level using anything from umbrellas to tanks as weapons.

It's kind of like Smash Bros, but in 3 dimensions and the levels are a tad more fun. For example, one level has everybody fighting in a tomb for about 30 seconds. Then the floor falls out and everyone is running from a giant boulder, Indiana Jones style.

Agreed, although, I still regret giving the game up because, well, 15 weeks of not playing video games killed me.

Man, I was obsessive about getting better than my brother. The first character he used was Mitsurugi. The first I used was Yoshimitsu. I cannot tell you how stacked that fight is if he has that BLASTED Damascus Sword. The no blocking side effect is not significant when I can be killed in 5 hits consistently.

So I adapted, eventually landing on Heihachi (PS2 version woot!) with his [I'm not gonna spell] weapon with 130-140 (IIRC) that actaully took life away from the enemy when you were hit! LOL! I won at least 3 rounds that way. The balance of power was never the same. UG! I need that game bad, it would resurrect my PS2. MK Deception is such an abortion, they "balanced" it so much every character simply sucks. Damnit, I need my classic PS2 fighting games, those were the GOOD OLD DAYS!

Oh, for the OP'er, you can't go wrong with DO2 if you need a 4 player fighting game. It's a quick pick up, has good graphics and other "assets" and the music in that version at least is great. God, the music sucks SO BAD in DOA3. Don't know about the remake of DOA2 on X-Box though (the online one), oh well, you don't play "eckg bock" do you?

X-Men Legends

I rented Starfox Asssault on Feb. 1st, just 'bought' it today (my parents pre-ordered it in full on Valentine's Day for me, awww... :D )....and I'd say it's pretty hot shit. If you've ever played any of the Starfox games, especially SF64, you'll fit right in, and it's pretty darn fun. Just remember to use the unlockable characters sparingly (*SPOILER:* Wolf O'Donnel is a killing machine).

Bwahahahaha. Would it help if I told you guys I've already gotten up to 100 multiplayer matches, with all the unlockables thereof?

I've always preferred Dead or Alive 3 to Soul Calibur for X-Box beatings. It's possibly the most accessable fighting game in history, it's possible to pick up te controls in literally no time flat, and there's a massive variation in the characters, with only one pair of clones, whereas Namco beaters tend to be quite clone heavy (SCII is no exception, with Soph/Cass, Mina/Kilik, and a lot of common moves for Xianghua and Yunsung.). It also helps that the fighting styles are, if not realistic, at least give the impression of being. (it's the only fighting game that can take Drunken Boxing and make a playable and fun character of it)

For good multiplay on the PS2, I recommend Rocky. It's fun and has a lot of unlockable characters. Provided you can get past the glaring discontinuity with the movies that is.
