Is there anyway to silence FireFox so that it will not play music or other sounds on websites with background noices?

this problem has nothing to do with the browser. it's a general system configuration for internet browsing. assuming you're using windows XP, go under control panel, internet properties, advanced. there will be a checkbox that says play sounds in web pages. uncheck it.

Wouldn't that only mute sounds in IE?

internet options should be global for all browsers.

No, that's for IE only.

BUMB!

Sorry for the necromancy, but I really really need to find a way to silence Firefox. Any help would be appreciated.

A quick search yielded this. In summary: you can use the Adblock extension to selectively filter audio files via extension and via targeting the use of "embed" tags needed for them to play in the background.

And another search yielded this.

Basically, AdBlock will prevent you from downloading any such files, and you probably don't want that, so this is what you can do instead.
Some dude wrote: /* block embedded sounds */
embed[src*=".mid"] { display: none !important }
embed[src*=".mp2"] { display: none !important }
embed[src*=".mp3"] { display: none !important }
embed[src*=".mp4"] { display: none !important }
embed[src*=".wav"] { display: none !important }
embed[src*=".wma"] { display: none !important }

(on windows, you can find that here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default\chrome\userContent.css)
(you have to create that file, it won't be there if you haven't already)
Edit: I see that tip was also in Datana's link.
