Computer crashes in games constantly

I recently formatted my OS partition and reinstalled XP. Now I can't play HL2, Doom 3, or other games for over 30 minutes without the computer blue screening for a split second then rebooting. XP always tells me one of two things about the error upon the restart - it's a device driver, or an nvidia driver. Right now I'm using the latest official nvidia drivers. It doesn't matter which one I use, the problem persists.
Before the blue screen and reboot problems started, HL2 was giving "the memory could not be read" errors after a very few minutes of game time. XP sees the proper 1 gig of ram as it should, my machine has made utilized over half the memory from non gaming use. If the memory is bad then wtf.
Every fan in my system is working - PSU, CPU, GPU. It may still be overheating but if it is then, well, I don't know. I just have Firefox open and my GPU core temp is 59 celsius, with an ambient temp of 43 celsius. Does that sound too high?
I've tried everything from official drivers to 70.xx to 71.xx .
