Metal Gear Solid, or Death to Hideo

Okay, someone somewhere worked out Hideo Kojima was an idiot back in the day: they released the virtual missions. It sold (I'm told) better than MGS. So... why, oh why, do they keep wasting their engine on horrible Hideo? Let him preach his preachyness, let him have his 30 minute text-only stare-at-the-screen-bored sections. Then use the engine to make a proper game. MGS3 did it AGAIN, and they've got a great engine and its horribly short. BAH.

I'm not against deep stories, or Japanese 'we hate you' storytelling. I just want a GAME too. Why the hell would I BUY MGS3 when I can finish it in one sitting?

All right, I must ask this: how the FUCK did you manage to finish MGS3 in one sitting? How much of a god of videogaming are you? I mean, I know you probably skipped the cut scenes, but still, how much marathon gaming did it take to do that in one sitting?!

I've got it pre-ordered here (by "I've", I mean my brother) and I think it's out 4th March, at least in the UK. The US for some reason gets MGS before anyone else, not really sure why.

In anycase, I hope it elaborates on certain points and I really want to see the Sons of Boss fight.

Cause they release one version in Europe that has to be translated to German, French, and Italian IIRC.

sons of liberty was reasonably long. granted it wasn´t r-type on hard but for a modern game it was long enough. and cool. kojima rules.

The original MGS sold better in the US then in Japan so ever since MGS2, it has been Kojima's habit to do a US release first as a thank you to fans. It's just another one of the little things that I like about the guy; it's not like Square couldn't do the same thing with the FF games instead of doing a six month lag between markets.

And gives the finger to Europe! We don't even get an extra DVD this time round, though we do still get the extra hard levels and maybe one or two minor extras.

Yes, it sucks, we know. But in Kojima and just about every other game developer that does a passable job of translating to PAL's defense, it takes a LOT of effort to get a game to run at the proper sync without borders, not to mention the translation difficulties. This of course doesn't apply to companies that come in six months late with a shoddy port, but you can understand the delay for the more upstanding game makers.

Bastards should be using PAL anyway, stupid Never Twice the Same Colour format.

This brings up an interesting question: are the European HDTV standards the same as ours? If they are, then the next genereation of consoles will pretty much do away with the whole translation factor as all the next gen consoles will run games at either 720p or 1080i.

HDTV hasn't taken off here (read: no one knows what it is, in the UK by and large) since the digital bandwidth is used for better standard quality resolution (SDTV) but more interactive features and channels. The satellite standards for HDTV have been set since last year, but no one seems really bothered yet. Until everyone has digital in a few years time, there's no need to tell everyone to get HDTV which is already looking set to be replaced by far better alernatives anyway (the Japanese have the right idea, I want telly with higher resolution than reality!).

BTW, it does answer questions that were left unanswered at the end of MGS2....

Six months? Yeah, if we're lucky. Usually it's a bit longer than that.

I don't really get it either, FF games will ALWAYS sell like hotcakes in the U.S. I don't see why they wouldn't want to get the games out earlier - maybe it's just the fact that the Japanese management doesn't really get the American market.

For the record for those unaware, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater takes place in the early 1960s, with the player controlling Big Boss (AKA Naked Snake).

If you enjoy the prospect of him flying over to personally garotte you for ruining the Russkie experience, go right ahead.

Because Japan is our oriental bitch. Much like China was the UKs. :P

Edit: Naked Snake? Who the fuck comes up with these codenames?

I can't recall where I heard Naked Snake, but I'm sure it's in one of the trailers even if I've forgotten and it seems bizarre. But that's Hideo for you.

It makes some amount of sense after you play through the game.
