You heard it here first, folks. Unless you went to GamesRadar.com before, then you didn't.

Is it game over for Snake? MGS4 to hit next-gen consoles with mystery characters and storyline

Work is already underway on Metal Gear Solid 4, which will be released for as-yet-unspecified next-generation consoles, Konami have just revealed at a press event at Berlin's Hotel Adlon.

However, Konami have not announced details of any characters, storyline or even a release date, although we have heard that it will be set in an entirely new location that hasn't been seen in previous MGSs. (A huge metropolis? Outer space?) As for formats, it's almost certainly going to debut on PS3 and we'd also expect there to be an Xbox 2 version at some point.

About the only thing that was revealed was the tagline, "No place to hide! No place for Hideo!" This is a reference to that fact that Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima is finally moving on from his role as the series' producer - presumably on to new next-gen projects - to a new position of executive producer.

Taking his place as MGS4 overlord will be Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo veteran, Kenichiro Imaizumi, marking the fact that the game will form part of an entirely new trilogy - so don't necessarily expect previous Metal Gear characters to be making an appearance.

That said, the character designer and art director will still be Yoji Shinkawa - who has worked on all previous Metal Gear Solids - so expect the series to retain its instantly recognisable aesthetic style.

We're not expecting to see anything of the game though until May's E3 games show, where it's anticipated that a trailer for the next-gen stealth-'em-up will be debuted as part of Sony's annual E3 conference.

In the meantime, we're off to a launch party tonight for Metal Gear Solid 3 at The Teufelsberg in Berlin - formerly a secret service listening post - where we'll be snooping for any additional MGS4 gossip. As soon as we hear any, we'll let you know.

Given MGS3 has only just bloody come out in the past few months, this is damn quick, but I'm glad it'll be on a new console.

Outer space? What, terrorists take over a space station and Snake has to bust in and save it.

I hope they don't do something too silly and stupid with it. From movies, you know a franchise is in trouble when they have to move it into space.

I'm sure if they were going to take that jocular comment seriously then they'd already be in deep shit.

Having said that, I still enjoyed Moonraker...

Mars or bust baby. It'd be interesting if they hurled Snake on an Espionage mission against another planet.

Snake in space? Gah, that'd probably be a bitch to control...

Funny though, I thought MGS3 was going to be the last of the Solid series, so shouldn't this be the first of a new line?

I was expecting a new name, but nothing really concrete yet so it may still change.

MGS is basically a trilogy it seems as the website shows with MGS1 being about genes, MGS2 about memes and MGS3 about scenes which all merge to form our life experiences at different times.
