Online Gaming makes me want to cry.

Post by Cabwi Desco »

All right, I'm CD and I have a problem. I see all these MMORPGS (galaxies) and talk to people who play online games or use X-live and quite frankly I envy their lucky asses. I wan't to enjoy such things but alas it is not for me, or rather not available.

See I live in an area of central Virginia I can only call internet Shitsville. Around here there are two real options for internet. Satelite, which where I live is hideously expensive and I've heard it can fuck up worse than a 56k lag. And the infamous 56k, which is gawd awful slow and lag is something that most online games and gamers abhor.

So can I get some advice on how I can upgrade and be able to play non-lag friendly games and X-Box Live.

Turn-based gaming is your FRIEND. That's about all that can be said about dialup. If you need a faster fix, try Tribes 2, which runs servicably on my old dialup line.

Most of the new generation of MMOs require some form of broadband, IIRC. The older ones can run on a 56k, but don't expect much. You'll get crap performance. As to other players complaining, your modem speed doesn't affect them in MMOs. That's more in online shooters like CS:Source, UT2k4, etc.

Civ3 is certainly one option. SE4 PBEM or PBW work fairly well, also.

Matrix Online doesn't require broadband and I've been playing Star Wars Galaxies for about a year on 56k with no problems (apart from the one inherent in the game itself).
