Does anybdoy else have a PSP on order? I am exited about the new console, and the games coming with it.
List any thoughts, good or bad you have on the upcoming PSP console.

Good points - big screen

Bad points - absolutely everything else I've ever heard about the PSP.

I might buy a DS, but there's no fucking way I'm buying a PSP. And I *love* Dynasty Warriors.

It *IS* amusing that they changed the battery spec because the originals were so horribly, horribly lame that everyone complained.

Its ALSO funny that the box button is mooshy. And that it endeavours to be a 'media center'. And that it uses Sony Evil Technology instead of media. The media is also ejected at huge velocity. But eh, little niggles eh? I'm sure it'll be wonderful. Not at all a complete failure, like... gee... every other console ever that wanted to be the next Game Boy. The Game Gear - PSP similarities are quite telling.

Then again, the DS is MUCH bigger in the flesh than it appeared in photos. So who knows.

I don't know what issues are going to be fixed for the american release, however, the prevailing 2 to 3 hour long play time speculation sounds like total FUD - people have said that Ridge Racer will run for 6 hours (brightness and volume not at their maximum) before the battery needs recharged. As long as DS? No, but good enough for road trips.

I wouldn't downplay the media center aspect if I were you. The UMD playback is inconsequential unless the movies go for super cheap, but playing MP3s and videos from a memory stick is a hot feature. If Sony ever releases a version with a hard drive then you have an iPod killer on your hands.

The battery life on Ridge Racers is 4 to 6 hours.

Who wants to play at anything less than full brightness? Nintendo doesn't even offer that option, its either on max or its not on at all. So when you hear Nintendo's high battery estimate, it's assuming MAXIMUM everything.

If you perfer graphics over gameplay and would rather have PS2 ports than actual new games, go ahead and buy a PSP.

But whatever you do, DON'T buy the PSP for media functions.

And yes, I WILL downplay the media aspect, because it SUCKS.

1) Less than TV resolution screen sucks for videos.
2) UMD disks cost as much as DVD, have lower resolution than DVD, and none of the extra features.

Firstly, you buy the PSP. $250 US price, includes a 32 MB memory stick.
Oooh, you want to play music! Okay, let's go buy a 1 GB memory stick. What format? Sony's proprietary uber-expensive Duo stick. Hey look! 1 GB costs $200!

Great, we've just spent $450 to get an MP3 player with the same capacity as a $150 iPod Shuffle! And less than 1/60th of the equivilant priced iPod PHOTO!

And its incapable of holding a two hour video without terrible compression (like 1/4th tv quality, 320xsomething).


No. PSP media capabilities suck. For the price of being actually capable of using it as a media player ($450 to $650, depending if you want the 1 GB or 2 GB card), you can buy the Wal-Mart $500 Linux Laptop with a WAY bigger screen and WAY more space (20 GB) and DVD player.



If you buy the PSP, buy it for its gaming capabilities, not media.



Anyway:
PSP advantages:
- Better graphics
- Pretty screen
- Limited multimedia functions
- You can use the disk bug to launch disks out of the drive at people.

PSP disadvatanges:

- Games are mostly console ports. I have different criteria for my handheld and console games.

- TERRIBLE battery life. Assuming max everything, battery life is generally 4-5 hours, compared to 8-10 on the DS and 12-16 on the GBA SP.

-Terrible loading times. It uses DISKS. Expect console grade loading times. The DS, to contrast, has almost NO loading times. You choose the level and it starts almost instantly.

- It uses disks. I don't want to carry minidisks in my pocket.

- Sticky triangle button.

- You might get arrested if you actually hit somebody with the flying disk.

- Terrible FPS control. The analog 'nubs' are vastly inferior to a joystick. Compare to the DS, with the touchscreen that is incredibly accurate, more than a keyboard and mouse.

Don't be RIDICULOUS. Physical size ALONE counts the PSP out of contention MP3-player wise. Every man and his dog at least has a 256Mb MP3 player the size of a pinky finger: why carry a huge-ass piece of shit like the PSP around instead? Where would you even PUT the HDD? It'd make it even BIGGER! I mean, MS-MP3 players are cheap in AU, and they're small. Go waste your money (and pocket space) on a PSP. I dare you.

Also, as I mentioned, the batteries have been upspecced for the US release due to their utterly laughable performance. Try and read my post next time.

I reiterate: as a media centre (the whole idea of which is stupid) the PSP has dangerous distractions (all that 'game playing' hardware, the extra control surfaces, etc), and as a game console its got shitty battery (probably the no2 important feature for ANYTHING BATTERY POWERED) and poor controls.

Heared bad things about the PSP so I bought the DS (and I love it). Ok, the DS games that are out so far arent my cup of tea yet (quite cheap tough) but it alos runs GBA games so what the hell

I've got 2 friends with PSPs that have had no problems with them. They got them on import at xmas.which is a bit crazy. Only ridge racer was out last time I saw their psps, but that seemed to run fine.

I've not had enough hands-on experience with either to give any definitive reviews, however.

The reason is that, being a new system, developers are creating new games for scratch while with the PSP they're just porting PS2 games.

Animal Crossing DS is confirmed online, I've heard good reviews of Vietiful Joe games, Age of Empires DS will be AWESOME, Metroid Prime Hunters should be great, new Zelda games are always great (nintendo has talked about it), new Mario games are always great, new Sonic games should be fun, Star Wars Episode III...drool, and I've heard great things about Advance Wars.

Heeey... I liked the Game Gear... even though it took like 90 batteries... and I was like 8 at the time...

The thing about that is that the DS has a sturdy feel to it. I feel its strong enough to take with me to Uni every day and perhaps take a few knocks. When I tried out the PSP I didn't get the same feeling.

Having tested both the DS and PSP at my local game shop (the owners are my buddies and they got test versions of the things from japan), I easilly arrived to the conclusion that there is absolutely no fracking way I would rather buy the DS than the PSP. Sure, the PSP is a bit on the large side and the battery life aint that shabby, but hot damn, the big screen and the awesome graphics are what impressed me. Seeing such graphical beauty on a hand-held console made me think that "this is how hand-helds should be damnit" and as such the PSP is the only hand-held I've ever even remotely considered buying.

The DS didnt impress me, there just wasnt anything in it that would have rocked my socks, but there was plenty of that something in the PSP.

My two cents in the matter atleast.

The DS is wholely unimpressive. The screen has also got problems with a large number of games made for the damn thing! It feels horrible, the games are the same old Ninty handheld crap and given a GB successor is likely on the cards, I'd wait.

I don't really care for the PSP either, but the DS is so overrated I don't imagine anyone with a decent phone or a GBA SP already buying one.

The system has some remarkable improvements over the GBA, and some over the N64, but Nintendo fanboys refuse to see the flaws.

• The second touch screen is a gimmick (sue me, people). Someone tell me how it could NOT be akward to use the touchscreen, especially with a stylus, and other controls at the same time. It will mostly be limited to HUD and map displays.
• NDS looks like it was hastily thrown together. This is probably because they needed something, anything, to counter the PSP. It looks barren and space is wasted.
• Specs are underpowered. The freaking thing doesn't even have texture filtering. The only technical aspect that impresses is the sound and the ability to practically play prerecorded (read: not midi) music once the card space approaches 256 Mb.
• Nintendo is releasing yet another Game Boy which is supposed to be the true successor to the GBA. More evidence of the NDS being a holdover, despite all the BS about catering to two seperate demographics.

Although I personally hardly use it for SM64, that shows what its capable of if one uses it.

METROID PRIME, though, is the CHIEF example of how it is not gimmicky. I can not play it well without the touchscreen, simple as that. The touchscreen control is AMAZING. I'm talking keyboard+mouse accuracy here. You put the pen on the screen, and moving it up is like moving a mouse up, down is like moving the mouse down, etc. Perfect control. D-pad is like the WASD keys.

Plus there is a thumb protector you can stick on your finger and use your thumb on the screen without smudging it.

Hastily thrown together? Nintendo's systems always look like toys, and as a result, are unbelievably durable. I'm clumsy, I've dropped my DS and SP plenty of times, and they have no damage other than scratches on the outer case (all over the place :s ).

The space doesn't feel wasted at all.

As for being thrown out to compete with the PSP, huh? They were both announced at almost the same time and both displayed on the same date.

The specs aren't that bad, its the same (slightly better) specs as the N64. Compare to the GBA at 16 MHz processor and 600k of RAM.

Nintendo has said they will be eventually releasing a new gameboy but Nintendo's CEO called the rumors that it'd be soon a bunch of speculation.


The lines WILL be kept seperate though. The DS will always have two screens and a touch screen (according to rumors, it will evolve in a PDA. And Linux is already being ported. That'll be sweet), the GB will always have one screen. Nintendo has always said the DS is not their competition to the PSP- they're not even in the same price range. The next GB will probably have PSP-like graphics (or perhaps Dreamcast?) but better battery life (Nintendo sets 10 hours as a minimum for the GB line).

While normally I say, give it a chance, the PSP is just a big no to me. I might eventually get one, but then again, I've said I was going to buy a Game Gear for years. I want to get a hands on before I say yay or nay, which I have the opportunity. However, I will say this. It's drawing the attention mostly of the 'bling' crowd around here. Which can be a bad thing since all they want is something flashy, and they promote games that suck. It seems to be a universal that they buy only those games. Ahem, back on topic. There are 'original' games, yet most of what they're toting is PS2 'ports'. That's not a very strong draw for me. While the poor DS is getting blasted even though it's highly innovational. Either way, no, I am not pre ordering one, and I doubt I will purchase one within the next year.

I watched the video, and while the guy has obviously had much practice with the touchpad controls, it looks super akward. I'm assuming he's holding the DS with his right hand. Unless the touch pad is functioning as a directional pad AND action buttons, I don't see how this works out. Maybe if the video was well lit I'd have a better idea of how it handles.

Hastily put together doesn't necessarily mean lack of durability. That you can drop it 5 times and not break it is great but that has nothing to do with the visual appearance, space utilization, and performance specs. But of course, we disagree on those points.

That seems bizarre and stupid and we've yet to see if it works to Nintendo's benefit. They need to do something, because the PSP is outselling the DS in Japan on a weekly basis.

Frankly, between the dearth of interesting games and Sony's bullshit 'we didn't screw up! Honest! Our system is a work of art....those flaws are...uh...features!' excuses, I don't have much interest in a PSP. I <3 my DS, though; it has a much brighter screen than an SP, and it enabled me to send my SP to my dad as a present. Soon enough I'll be playing Zelda, Mario Kart, and Xenosaga on it. Whee.

Whether they drop all of these ports in the library is something entirely different. The damn thing hasn't even come out yet. Either way, one of thier biggest totes is GT4 on the PSP, and it will be the PS2 GT4 at that. Which is just a load of horse shit, since GT4 is probably one of the hardest system pushing games in the PS2 line up. Why rely on portable versions of your console games. That's buying the same game twice, just to play it on the road. (although I have three versions of Mario 3 and one is the GBA, heh). Either way, thier emphasis is on having ports.
