Thunderbird Question

I'm in the middle of switching my parents over to Mozilla, and I'm having a bit of a problem with Thunderbird. I check their e-mail - the virus scan (AVG) runs OK, the E-mail is received - but immediately after, I lose my DSL connection. It's not a huge problem - I can easily reconnect. But it's an annoyance I'd like to take care of. Suggestions?

Edit: Ok, it's worse, my DSL is just disconnecting randomly now for no apparent reason, though I think it has something to do with Thunderbird.

That doesn't really sound like something that would be caused by an e-mail program. Thunderbird doesn't modify any connection settings -- it merely tries to make a single connection out though the default mail port -- so if it's the cause of the disconnections, then another e-mail program would have caused the same (have you tried Outlook Express?). Until your update, I was suspecting that AVG was set to disconnect after acquiring updates or connecting to the Internet for mail, but what you've added indicates that this probably isn't the case.

What are you using to connect? PPPoE, or an ISP-specific scheme? I'm not too familiar with DSL (my area only has cable), so I might not be able to help much...

Problem solved. Thanks though!
