Wow, that game was way too addicting. I was doing well until about level 16, the tanks utterly kicked my ass. Hmmm, maybe if I hire more silo workers . . .

Damn, this is fucking hard!
The farthest I've gotten is halfway through the teens, and that's when some kind of bug helped me out by making the missile launcher's initial cost the same as a silo worker (12000) rather than 35000. Without the bug, I haven't been able to get past level 12! The rocket guys kick my ass!
Does anyone have any pointers on what to buy when?

Early on go for increases in your clip and gunmen. When you hit the teens, start looking to seriously build up your improvements. You should have a silo by the late teens and at least the full wall.
Add enough siloworkers to keep a pretty continuous fire going from it and then stop. The silo is shit against tanks, but it massacres infantrymen. Focus on Gunmen, adding a carpenter or two every couple of levels to keep your repair rates up.

I remember a similar game with a castle, bowmen, mages, etc... In the end my defences were so strong I didnt have to do anything apart from pushing start and watch my minions kill wave after wave of stickies
Too bad you can't save your progress (unlike the previous)

You can save your money in the early levels by only spending money to increase your clip. You don't have to have large chunks of your money disappear to gunmen when you could do it all yourself. You can spend that money later on more important things. You can successfully stop the hordes from ever reaching your fort if you click like hell. Reload whenever there is a break between enemies actually reaching your wall. For instance, if you see 3 guys just about to reach your wall and there are more behind them, but traveling slower, blast the 3 guys first, reload, and then blast the others. Also, only shoot the guy that will reach your wall first. If there is guy A ahead of guy B, and B is overtaking A, shoot B first. By the time you can afford around 30 bullets if you spend money on nothing else, the hordes will be able to reach your walls. At this point, build up your wall and hire gunners.
When the rocket infantry start appearing, it is important to have a sufficient number of gunmen to deal with the normal sword-bearing and assault rifle-toting infantry. You must attack the rocket infantry with your sniper rifle at all costs before they launch their rockets. Get used to targeting them first, as their numbers will only increase in later levels. But this does not diminish the importance of attacking the rest of the enemies. Once all rocket infantry are disposed of, start attacking whatever enemies are nearest your wall and then shift immediately back to the rocket infantry once they appear.
If you think you can survive a few rounds without hiring many more gunmen or carpenters to save up for a silo and at least one worker to operate it, I strongly recommend doing that. Also saving up for buying the sniper rifle before maxing out anything else also greatly aides in bringing down the hordes, especially when you have to face the rocket infantry and tanks. Without the sniper rifle upgrade, you cannot survive the later levels with tank swarms.
Going from memory, when around 3 or 5 tanks appear at once, you should definitely have the sniper rifle upgrade, have around 30 silo workers, 60 gunmen, 20 carpenters, and should have the maximum fortification possible.

I couldn't get past the first level. I shot my gun empty and couldn't reload. I hit the space bar repeatedly to no effect.
