I need a new mouse. I want a USB optical mouse that's accurate, long-lasting, and costs $20 at most. Any advice?

I've always had good experience with Logitech mice. Not cordless, but optical with a scroll wheel, cost me around 10 buckaroos.

EDIT: Decently sturdy too.

My last mouse was a Logitech, and it kept turning itself off whilst in use. Maybe it was that particular one.

As for cord vs cordless, I'll consider cordless when they come with radioisotope batteries that last a couple years at a time...

I think it was just a problem with your mouse. My suggestion for the mouse is just outside of your stated price, if you include shipping. It's the MX310. Newegg.

Newegg 404s that mouse, but I googled. Nice mouse, if a bit pricey. I think it's worth the money...

P.S. You look cute in that pic you posted in AMP...

I like the MX1000 cordless rechargable, but it's fairly pricey.

That sentiment has always baffled me. I'm utterly incapable of handling those things. To each his own, I guess...
No recommendations but Logitech is usually a no-brainer. Unless you're a southpaw, of course.
As for that insipid 'cordless need batteries! Batteries run out! Cordless suxx0rs'
argument, I have three words for you:
Recharging base station'.

Corded mice don't turn themselves off, AFAIK. So that's a definite plus ;)

Neither do cordless ones, you know.

Ein's would be the second one I know that does it. So much for that, eh?

The Logitech MX cordless are rechargable, and they're last a damn long time. Only time I ever run 'em out is if I forget to put them on the charger and go another day with them, or a couple of marathon KOTOR sessions.

But they're outside the price range, alas.

Once you get one, though, you can never go back to a mundane, corded mouse again.

every cordless i've seen in operation has a power saving mode which kicks in after 2-5 minutes of inactivity.

not that it's any real problem though, as all you've got to do is move the thing before it realises it's in use again and switches itself back on.

but then again, this ain't about cordless vs corded. This is about trying to fix a man up with a mouse. And unfortunately my trackball-skewed perspective is of no use here, so I'll just leave it at that.

Any cordless mouse would cost me over 50 bucks anyway, that's why I'm not advising them. I have nothing against them, personally.

The MX700-1000 series of Logitech mice is very solid. I love my MX1000, and I loved my MX700 before that. Beats the living crap out of Microsoft's offerings.

The MX510 (or the latest MX518, or whatever the number was) is probably the best for you. Corded, and very high-specs.

Those are at least $15 over his price range. I should know, I have a MX510.

I'm willing to pay up to around $25 or $30 if the mouse won't fail me for at least a couple years...

Hmmm..... You might make it below $20 on a non-mainstream dealer.

Look up Pricewatch, or some other place like that. Amazon, Ebay, whatever.

I got mine, a cheapass Memorex optical mouse, for maybe $10-15 (don't remember exactly) at Big Lots. Two buttons, wheel, cord, but it's operated just dandy for the past year and a half... I fully expect to keep it for the rest of college unless I do something stupid like drop a textbook or somethin' on it.

Wagh, forgot to mention something: It HAS to have a mouse wheel. I can't manage my weapon in Quake effectively without one...

I'll have to agree and say Logitech as well. I've been using logitech mice for years now - they're well worth the money it'll cost. I've got a cordless logitech keyboard/mouse - around £45, but the batteries last for months, and it's well worth it. No problems with it at all :)

Newegg has the MX510 for $28. I got one about 6 months ago. It's very good.

Could anyone with the MX510 tell me how long the cord is?

It's around 6 feet.
