Taking DVD screen caps

Post by RogueIce »

Well, I now know it's not as simple as hitting Prnt Screen when watching a DVD on my computer. *sigh*

So, I recognize now that you need some kind of program to do it. Is there anyplace with a free DVD screen cap thingy, or am I gonna have to pay? And if I do, what's the cheapest one that'll still give me good quality?

BSplayer can do what you ask.

And it is free :)

PowerDVD has a button which you can use to capture a picture. You just then have to paste it into a paint program(MS Paint, Adobe, etc.)

Why won't it play my DVD? :(

You need to have a DVD codec, if any other app can play DVD's then you are ok.

And you need to open the seperate *.vob files from the dvd, it will not play the DVD automatically, atleast I have not found any way to do that.

Hmm... I preserved my file preferences, and while it plays media files just fine, when I tried to play a file off of a DVD, it played it about twice as slow...

EDIT: Well that's just dandy...
15.) Can BSplayer play DVDs?

* Not, yet. However, BSplayer can play decrypted . vob files which consist an unlocked dvd . To decrypt a locked dvd disc, you use a DVD-ripper like DVDdecrypter .
I knew it was too good to be true.

It tried that, it won't work. They need to be unlocked I guess. So I'm assuming that means mine are locked for some odd reason?

And there's several .VOB files, but no .VOD that I can find...

He means .vob. And I think DVD are supposed to be locked. Kind of a security thing, you know?

What DVDdecrypter does is copies the decrypted .VOB to your HDD. It's fairly close to impossible to fuck up your DVD while doing so. Also useful for backing up your DVDs into MPEG-4 files. Which reminds me... I need to get some DVD-Rs. And CD-Rs.

Well, that somehow got the Spanish version onto my harddrive, and not even the full episode either...

And though it played the one, it refuses to play the rest now for some unGodly reason. Even the same one if I try opening it again!

ARG! :x

EDIT: Oh, sure, now you play it. Choppy sound, and NO PICTURE?! Off the DVD itself.

DVD Decrypter will get you the decrypted DVD VOB files. You can then use any number of player/processors to get frames, sequences, sounds, whatever. I personally like to use VirtualDub with MPEG support. Doesn't handle asynchronous timestamps too well, but that's usually not a problem.

VideoHelp.com is the ultimate resource for video processing of any kind.

Both the tools I mentioned are listed there, and are both freeware.

Nevermind. Now it plays. Only in Spanish though. But that's not important.

It'll only take a screencap in it's "Movie Size" size, which is for this one set at 720x480. Does anyone know if I can change this so I can make a screengrab an effective wallpaper for me?

It'll work better if you decrypt the .VOB onto your HDD. Oh, and most DVDs have multiple audio tracks, so you'll have to make sure you've got the right one.

Does that programme work out of the box or do I need to feed it a whole bunch of codecs and plugins to get it to work?

Bwah, I get errors trying to screencap with MPC. Plus the playback has choppy, slightly slowed down audio...

Nothing is more convenient and effective for DVD screencaps than PowerDVD.

As I recall it doesn't save as jpg's though (which is what I want for most screencaps). The option isn't even there as I recall.

If this has changed please correct me. I haven't used it in ages.

Perhaps. But, as far as I know, I'd have to shell out money for that. So I'll live with this for now. :)

It can save as BMP, or it can copy to clipboard and then you can paste it into any app you want (such as GIMP) and save in any format you want.

That's what I basically did during the short time I was able to use the "pro" version of WinDVD (my computer doesn't like Power DVD), which saves screen captures in BMP format.

I never was able to get screencaps to work in PowerDVD. NVDVD works fine for me, though. If you have an nvidia card, Spanky, I suggest trying it.
