Avast seems pretty good, been using it a while now. Registration key is free for private use. My cousin claims it detected a bunch of stuff Norton missed and it has options for many things like mail/web/p2p/IM Clients which I guess can be handy.

Norton is the spawn of satan, and is harder to get rid of than most viruses to boot.
