Are my D2 characters broken?

Post by Stark »

I uninstalled everything on my puters to temporarily store my serverdata during a bit of a fuckup last week. After reinstalling my software and replacing the save files, I've noticed that D2 doesn't like my characters anymore.

There are 3 files for each character, one of which is apparently a 'key'. Does D2 try to stop you transferring characters between computers or installations? The old install used my friends key, this one uses mine: is that a problem?

That's interesting. If you can't get your characters to work, and you have to create new ones, I would suggest using Battle.net, and you'll never loose your characters again (as long as you play with them on a regular basis)

I'm not sure I can stomach returning to the beginning of the Left Click Universe. Oh well.

I've been transfering my d2 singleplayer characters for years. Multiplayer you can't do though.

FUCK the Realms. I lost my level 43 Amazon to lag. Yes, she was hardcore, but so what? Open BNet and nothing else.

Stark: I didn't know you played D2.

I don't, really. Only started a few weeks ago, to give me something to do between study. Only made it to level 19 too.

Sooooo... if my char files are in the save directory, but none of them show up in the char list, whats the go? I looked for utils for transferring characters, but there aren't any so apparently this doesn't normally happen. What do you guys do? They're SP only characters.

Could be the program doesn't know it's there...perhaps there's some configuration file you need to adjust.

There's one thing i know of that can cause your characters not to appear on the list. I wouldn't have thought you'd fall prey to it, but you never know....

You've gotta be running the same or later version of the game that the character was saved under to see them on the list.

So if you had 1.10 before, you've got to upgrade to 1.10 again before you can see the characters on the list.

Like I said, I don't reckon that's the problem, but it's a possibility, so it's worth considering.

I didn't know that.

AFAIK the key file only holds the hotkey settings. I've transferred characters before, so I don't think that's the problem. And if you ever need/want items I have waaaay more then I'll ever use muled away.

I thought the key file might have been some ridiculous lockfile. Oh well: it's only D2 :)
