"Microsoft's New Mantra: 'It Just Works' "

Microsoft's new slogan is apparently, "It just works"...interesting. Sound familiar to anyone?

http://www.apple.com/switch/whyswitch/

Yeah, THAT'S where I heard it before.

I'm also bursting out laughing at the new features.
Allchin, a wiry-built 54-year-old who has been in charge of Windows for almost a decade, is admirably blunt about his own frustrations using the current operating system. It annoys him, for example, that the adjustments necessary to move a laptop from a work to a home network aren't obvious. Longhorn, he said, will make that process easy, along with many other common tasks.
My Mac does that in one click.
If you put in a DVD, the volume will automatically adjust and the video will just start playing full screen. “You shouldn’t have to spend a lot of time struggling with things,” Allchin said, adding that the number one design goal for Longhorn has been: “It just works.”
Mac does that too, though you can turn it off in system preferences. So does PowerDVD for Windows.
Longhorn will automatically clean up, or “defragment,” your hard drive, if it is required. You won’t even know it’s happening
Wow, Longhorn is getting a feature OS X had since its launch FIVE YEARS AGO!
Longhorn doesn’t just show you an icon for a document, for example, but rather an itsy-bitsy picture of the first page. If you have a really good monitor—and eyesight—you could even read the numbers in that spreadsheet
Isn't this already implemented in Mac OS X and Windows XP since BOTH their launches for images? I think it's already in Tiger for documents too, not sure.

Really, really sad. Their "new features" have been used in Macs for years and even the marketting slogan is ripped straight off the web site.

ability to have files in more than one folder simultaneously
Smart Folders. Already exist. :)
In fact, it's even in Linux, not just OS X. But its especially well done with Spotlight in Tiger.

And while we're on the subject...

Can't they think of ANYTHING original?...sigh.

The slogan should be, "It works, just" ;)

Come on, it's MS. They haven't done anything original since... ever.

"It just works - don't ask us how. Because we bought the code from someone else."

You hippie Mac users, come embrace the darkness (and in some case solid blueness) with us Windows users.

wtf ... I mean I bash the Evil Empire as much as the next guy who works at a company selling Linux-based products, but come on .....

"adjustments necessary to move a laptop from a work to a home network" .... yeah, we call that DHCP .... you have to unplug the ethernet cable at work and then plug it in at home. Ooooooo, tricky.

"video will just start playing full screen" - um, like almost any windows-based media player will do if you ask it to?

"automatically clean up, or "defragment" - um, can't you schedule that in Windows now? I certainly wouldn't want it to kick off while I was in the middle of a processor-intensive task.

"rather an itsy-bitsy pictue of the first page ..."

Already do-able and frankly it's usually just a big waste of memory.

Exactly. It's incredible that they are touting these as "new features" of Longhorn.

BTW for the auto defrag I believe it can be done in tweakUI IIRC.

Pretty windows and flashy effects are no match for a good shell script at your side, kid.

Am I alone in thinking 'convienience' features are fucking annoying? I hate autorun, I hate autoplay, I hate XP starting FUCKING WM9 whenever I put a DVD in, even though I've never used it, set powerDVD to the default, etc. I'm quite capable of opening directories myself, actually... and just because I put a DVD in doesn't mean I want to watch it RIGHT NOW. Put a 'play DVD' button on the taskbar, don't start it automatically.

And how the hell does MS hide the priorities for their own software? Every now and again a movie or image or something will be opened with MS-gaysoft instead of the software I've been using since install, and I have to reset the default again.

Hey now! Don't go comparing the fine gay people of the world to... :shudders: Microsoft!!!

Yup. I agree completely. Those actually make me NOT want to buy it.

I like an operating system that doesn't put pixel shaders on the menus, requiring several gigs of RAM to just run. :P

Hopefully without getting into this debate again, suffice to say meanings of words change. When I use "gay" in the above sense, it has absolutely nothing to do with actual homosexual people, and I assume Stark's the same.

I know I know ;) Just ribbing a bit. Besides, Everyone knows Mac is gay! I mean, seriously, an entier brand of Computers that looks to have been by a profesional design department rather then a bunch of Engineers?

And their logo! Sure, it's all one color now, but during the 80's I remeber a different color schem ;)

Ah, Marketting Ads. Concentrated appeal to the lowest common denominator.

This feature(or somethign really similar) actually made it into Windows XP RTM in 2001. WinXP will automatically defrag & move commonly used files around the harddrive every so often.

How it does this is rather interesting. Windows will profile the disk access of teh first 'x' seconds of application startup. Biuld up a statistics and usage patterns and then organise the commonly used files on isk to reduce the amount of time loading them. In addition windows will also preload files it thinks the application will be using according to the usage statistics.
Can't they think of ANYTHING original?...sigh.
Its a marketing ad. Dont expect anything but blue glitter in lethal concentrations. Washing detergents will have 'blue glitter' in them, it has utterly no purpose to actual cleaning but to make it look better and thus hopefully sell better.

An intel engineer working on the pentium series compared the massive "mhz" rating of pentium processors at the reduction of how much actual work is done per clock cycle as blue glitter.
The slogan should be, "It works, just" ;)
Compared to what the Mac slogan should be "It now works" ;)

It took them a while to actually get a proper OS, and Apple needed to buy out another company to get that right. And OS X 1.0 is a damn payed for beta.

Macs are ridicolously expensive and their UI sucks.

And every company which thinks that selling computers with one button mice as a default should be boycotted.

The IBM Processors in Macs are worse for rendering than AMDs or Intels.
