After years of announcements, unveilings, disappearances, re-announcements, and eventual limbo, Duke has finally materialized - in a one-of-a-kind early showing to PC Gamer. You've heard all the jokes, read all the forum threads, and taken notes on all of the various suicidal wagers (e.g., "I'll immolate myself if Duke Nukem Forever ever comes out"). Well, it's almost time to get out the matches, friends.

After our demo of Prey, we were treated to an unprecedented presentation of Duke Nukem Forever - the real deal - courtesy of George Broussard. Though it's still too early and rough for 3D Realms to unveil the game in these pages, we are able (and delighted!) to report with our own eyes that DNF is up and running and in very fine form indeed.

Summing up Duke's lengthy stay in limbo, Broussard says: "The short version is that after a lot of false starts, we regrouped and threw out everything in late 2002, and moved forward with our own rendering technology on top of Unreal. We've been moving forward and are making progress and are on-track since that decision was made. Most of the weapons and creatures are done. Most of the levels exist, and there's a ton of gameplay. We're in the process of pulling it all together, and very much look forward to showing it off. It won't be vaporware much longer."

We were treated to a demo of various "interactions" between Duke and the environments, and all of them ring true to the classic interactivity of Duke Nukem 3D. We can't spill the beans yet on the specifics, but needless to say, this is very much the Duke we all came to know and love in 1996.

The will not be at E3 2005...Broussard obviously doesn't feel compelled to submit Duke to a premature pony show for the benefit of the game's myriad nay-sayers. He's got the calm expression of a poker player surrounded by suckers who think he's bluffing. But out 20-minute walkthrough of Duke Nukem Forever convinced us that 3D Realms is going to lay a full house on the table in 2006... just in time for the 10th anniversary of Duke Nukem 3D.

Ours was the only look anyone is going to get at Duke until the game is ready for a deluxe unveiling. Needless to say, PC Gamer will be Johnny on the spot. We came to Texas to kick ass, preview Prey, and chew bubble gum - and we've already previewed Prey and we're all out of gum.
