When you play a videogame, what moves or tactics on the AI's behalf makes you believe you're up against a worthy foe?

One instance I can name...

In Halo 2, at the beginning of the Delta Halo level, me and the ODSTs are holed up inside the temple, awaiting reinforcements, and two Phantoms come in. Where I am, I could pick off all the troops they drop one by one, but they stagger their deployments so some of the troops land behind cover, and last far longer then they would.

I was finishing up a Hunter, only to to turn around and see a marine sidestep the other's swing, and blast him with a shotgun.

Playing HW2 Skirmish, when the AI baits my fleet out with an attack, then hyperjumps past my fleet into attack range of my mothership. Had I not maintained reserves...

In Icewind Dale, I was in the ice caverns and I sent my thief ahead to backstab the biggest enemy he found. My fighters and clerics and mages were set up so that the thief could retreat back to them and then form up behind the fighters so we would have a united front. The thief did get his backstab off, but when he retreated back I found that a second group of enemies had gotten behind us and was attacking my formation from the rear. I managed to beat them, eventually, but it was only because my guys were so much stronger and not because the tactics we used were better--and the enemy accounted for themselves by killing two of my characters in spite of the fact that their group was weaker than mine.

Psycho Mantis in metal gear solid. the fact he knew whether or not you were cheating with a turbo controller was a very very nifty feature.

The enemies in God of War, specifically in challenge mode. Teamwork, and precision tactics to deny you your victory conditions.

HW2:PDS -- I saw a couple of Merkevas supported by that special-ops carrier and thought "yes! easy kill." I sent out a line of frigates to go blow them up without doing advance screening. And then when I close in I finally burn through the enemy's jamming and a whole damn wall of frigates + DDL start shooting at me.

Any enemy in Fragile Allegiance. Even the Rigellians still own my ass even though I start the completely unethical "asteroid warfare" (that is, putting engine on your stripped-up asteroids and ramming them into the their asteroid bases WITHOUT declaring war).

In rise of nations when your playing with infanite money and invade the CPU uses small groups of troops to raid your men so you cannot just tell all your men to march straight it. (For insance I sent in 30 Heavy Machine gunners to attack a british city and they cleared out a lot of my men with highlanders LOL) also the comp loves to take out your supply trucks so your men take attrician dammage, then they stall your troops long enough for them to all die.
