Un-Openable Video Files

I have on my computer a number of video files, who's legality I won't talk about, that should be series 3 stargate episodes.

They are of the correct size, but refuse to play. Files from the smae source for earlier serieses play fine, as does one member of s3. The files that do play are avi files, and the ones that don't play claim to also be avi files.

Changing the exension has no effect, so I'd be inclined to think they are actually be avi, except that nothing I've attacked them with will do anything with them.

One thingimibob I have is supposed to tell me what codecs are needed to play a file, but it simply tells me "not a valid avi file".

Any ideas, or shall I just try to replace them from somewhere else?

It's almost certainly a codec issue; not all AVIs are created equal.

Try installing this
