How do you set up a BBS?

Like it says in the title, how do you set up a BBS like the one here at SD.net

After pissing about in several WoW guilds a few friends and I are gonna set up our own, we have the people interested and we've decided we need a website to help us co-ordinate Raids, place orders with our crafters etc and we've decided that the phpBB software would suit us best.

So from step one how the hell do you do it?

You could try making one on ProBoards. Hosted for you and all that, but options are kinda limited. My old guild leader from SWG set up this one, which suited us just fine.

http://www.phpbb.com/

The setup is fairly easy, you'll need a webhost that allows you to use PHP and you'll need a datbase.

On the other hand, you can always use one of the sites that hosts them for free, like http://www.freeyabb.com/ or http://www.dk3.com/index/

Naturally, you have less control over them that way, but it's free, and you don't have to bother setting it up yourself.

Get webspace.

Get board software.

Learn board software.

Set it up.

Advertise/Pimp/Whore it out to the digital public.

The short answer, I guess.

Be sure, of course, that said webspace has support for whatever forum software you want to run.

I did it with proboards. If I can do it, you can too. Just start up a proboard account and ask questions as you go along.

I found http://www.greatboard.com/
Haven't tried it so I don't know how it compares to others, but apparently it's got many options for a free board.

Proboards is great if you just want a place to make several boards and have people post to them. Anything more get phpbb.

I don't like Proboards' terms of use. If you have discussions typical of the SD.net community there and someone complains, your board is gone. Try this: http://freeyabb.com I hosted my board with them, and it's working out great. You can choose phpBB or Invision. I went with the former myself, but use whatever works for you.

Oh man, Trade Wars... if only we'd had more players for it. And Jet Fighter.

Oh, memories.

When you use a remotely hosted and administered system such as proboards, the administrators of the system have you by the balls. Just keep that in mind before ever trying such a system. If you trust that they will treat your balls well, then don't worry about it.

I can testify as of now that setting up a phpbb is ridiculously easy :)
Even computer-illiterates should manage that...
