The best anti virus

I'm intrested in what the board thinks as the best anti-virus solution.

Right now I'm using AVG, but I've been hearing rumours that its fallen behind the times when it was really the best.

So what Anti-viruses do you use, and why?

Another note: If you have links to websites comparing the AV's, please post a link.

A Mac :P

Okay, okay, more seriously...I actually want to know too, I'm using AVG and it picks up viruses every scan but doesn't seem to remove them properly.

AVG does not remove viruses in compressed files (ZIPs).

Almost anything that isn't Norton or Mcafee.

Not only do they fail to work in spectacular and irritating ways, they seem universally unable to automatically remove any viruses at all.

And removing Norton Antivirus itself makes cleaning up virus infections look like fun. (Does an AV program really need 600+ registry entries? Does it have the decency to clean them up wen you uninstall it? No, of course it fucking doesn't.)

Or, of course, there's the only cast iron way to prevent your Windows box from ever getting infected. Turn it off. Forever.

If I get around to installing Windows, I'll use it for gaming only- I usually don't bother running antispyware/antivirus on my Windows partition- it sucks up what little performance I have, and I'm not stupid enough to install the shit in the first place (and that NT4 box my sister is using can rot for all I care).

The problem I have with Norton and McAffee is that they're both SUCH RAM whores. It's a significant performance upgrade on my rigs just to get rid of them.

I would do it that way but I play alot of games with downloadable content (like starcraft) and as such need the protection incase some fucktard gets their game files infected.

The best AV is some common sense, do not D/L shit.

Do not open every fuckedup file you get in the mail and so on.

And when that first layer of defence fails it is nice to have a anti virus as backup.

Thats obvious, and my main line of defense, and should be everyone's, but IF a virus passes the defenses, I want a good firewall.

Vendetta, do you have some links to show how they fail?

To you and me perhaps but 99% of computer users D/L and run whatever shit happens to come their way.

Here is some anti virus tests.

If you think Norton/Symantec or McAfee are resource hogs, just try running Kaspersky Anti Virus.

KAV slows my both my brand new Inspiron 9300 (P-M 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM) and my Athlon64 desktop system down to a crawl on initial bootup and it makes web pages take forfucking-ever to load up in the browser.

I can't believe I wasted $60 on this software. :x
It's back to Symantec AV 10 for me.
