Monitor Yellowing!

As seen in Venting: Anything I can do to stop this? It's killing my color accuracy which I need for my ship design work...

Does this happen immediately as you turn ony your monitor? If so, you're hosed. Get a new monitor. If it takes a while to happen, you're possibly not so hosed. Still should probably get a new monitor though.

Takes a while. Plus it'll randomly whiten or blue up at times and seems to stabilize at around 7500-9000 after a couple hours of operation.

I've seen the color temp as low as 3000 and as high as 10000 as measured by the Mk 1 Eyeball.

You're screwed, Einy. I'll give your monitor a month or two at most before the colors get permanently fucked up. Most likely the blue color will become dominant (or the yellow, but my bet is on blue) pretty soon and normal operation is going to become more and more irregular. Once the problem crops up, it goes downhill pretty fast. I've lost two monitors that way over the years. The first was on our ancient Amstrad 1512 and the second on my previous monitor about a year ago. Once the color regulation circuitry (usually the source of the problem) goes on the fritz, it will cost more to fix than to buy a brand new monitor (never mind a slightly used one).

So you're hosed in any case, how long you want to put up with it depends on how high your irritation threshold is.

I had a monitor that would turn yellow. It was the weirdest thing. Every time I physically HIT the monitor, the color would revert to normal. People would hear me beating the computer because every 10 minutes or so, bam, it'd go yellow so I'd hit it a few times and ding, back to normal.

One day I dropped the monitor. I plugged it in and bam! It was working. Worked for a month in fact. Then it went yellow again.

It's in the basement now

Well, shit.

Is there such a thing as a 'cheap' 19" monitor? I would love to keep my great big huge...

Rez. Get your mind out the gutters, fellas ;)

I dont care so long as it's good for 1280x1024x32@85Hz at least. But if this pans out, practically all current CRT and LCD tech will be obsolete within the year...

try checking out newegg or Tiger Direct then. they've typically got good prices on stuff

Well... you don't actually need a 19" monitor for that resolution. A 17" LCD can manage that, and refresh rate doesn't matter for them very much. About $200 for one of those from Newegg, plus shipping. 19" CRTs are available for $25 cheaper, also from newegg

I'll probly try to find a 19" from the guy whom I got the computer from. He seemed to have enough monitors to go around :)

Oh fucking hell, now I'm getting afterimages to the right of things on the screen! Yeugh!

EDIT: And it seems to be steadily getting worse by the minute!

Refurbished monitors are usually pretty cheap while still working well. I got a 21" CRT for only $200 from Fry's.

If you go the LCD route, be sure to get one with a decent response time.

I don't feel like rewording it, so I'll just quote what I said in Vent just now:
Einhander Sn0m4n Has a Fucking L4m3ass Monitor wrote:Fucking hell, this monitor's even worse! It's damn near the blurriest thing I've seen since TV, I can't get the brightness up anywhere near half what the other one's is, and not only is 1, 2, and 3 the same shade of white, everything past 14 on the following chart is BLACK!

Worst: I had to kill my rez to 1024x768 to get the monitor to do anything better than a 60hz flicker

Well, my Muse has successfully been cockblocked. :finger: I feel like killing something *boots Quake* :kill:

I got the new monitor; same make and model as the one with the yellowing and streaking problems. This one has a much less severe version of the streak-to-the-right, but it has no yellowing whatsoever. I think the streaking may have nothing to do with the monitor itself and everything to do with the power feed off the end of the surge protector. BRB...

Well it's not the power feed. I made sure to get the monitor securely plugged to the gfx card port too.

I don't get it; the monitor didn't streak at the other place where I got it...

This is probably a silly question, but it does bear asking.

What's near the monitor?

Anything near the monitor that generates a magnetic field could possibly be responsible for your current situation.
Personally, I doubt that's the problem, but it might be, so I'd be remiss if I didn't at least suggest it.

Have you tried differing resolutions? Or possibly changing the colour quality?

Nothing magnetic, and yes I've tried different rezzes.

Video card going?

Gods forbid! I just got it when I got the comp three months ago! I notice this monitor's streaking is slowly disappearing as I use it anyway, so this thread is on its way to burning out...

I actually misdiagnosed a failing video card before as a monitor failure. Turns out that the old GeForce 256 (yeah, the first of the GeForce line) had finally given up the ghost. Replaced the monitor, realized that wasn't the problem, then went and got a new card. Problem solved.

Maybe you could borrow a video card from your friend for a day just to test if it's at fault.

It'll hafta be tomorrow, plus as I said the streaking's going byebye. I'll still try it tho. P.S. SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon 9200 with 128MB DDR

I went through it last year, when the left behind HELL gave up the ghost finally, along with my 10 year old 14" monitor.

Ein, have you checked your card to see if the fan is still functioning on the heatsink? This could be as simple as an overheating issue. Check for damage on the card itself too.
