Nintendo, the world leader in video game innovation, stated loud and clear that they are not to be overlooked in the next generation home console race with the revelation of several unique features of the company's next console system, code name Revolution, to key media outlets. According to the early information, Revolution will combine powerful technology and gaming-focused features in Nintendo's smallest home game console yet.



In its final form, Revolution will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer. The versatile Revolution will play either horizontally or vertically, allowing the user total flexibility in setting up a gaming session wherever they have a television.



Thanks to Nintendo's hardware development partners IBM and ATI, the small system will be packed with power that will enable it to wow players with its graphics. Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube 3-inch disks along with its own standard, double-layered DVD disks in the same self-loading media drive.



In the next generation, the addition of the Internet will be important to all consoles and particularly important to Nintendo. Revolution will be wireless Internet ready out of the box.

The Revolution will reportedly play DVD movies, indicating that Nintendo will make the jump to a standard media format rather than creating a brand new proprietary format for the system. The Nintendo 64 utilized expensive cartridges that ultimately pinned developers with higher costs, and subsequently promoted third-party support for Sony's Playstation. The company again used a proprietary mini DVD format for the GameCube and prevented the system from playing regular sized DVD movies.

The new system will also be a super sleek unit according to Nintendo's vice president for corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan. The unit will stand as tall as a standard DVD case and is said to be just over an inch thin. The masterful feat in engineering will trump the new Microsoft's Xbox 360, which is about the size of the first generation Playstation 2. The size will also give Nintendo an attractive appeal to sell to consumers, a tactic that rival Sony has used to generate buzz in the PS2 and PSP.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Revolution will include built-in Wi-Fi technology for wireless online play, and will be backwards compatible with the Nintendo GameCube. The company is expected to reveal more details on Revolution at next week's E3 in Los Angeles.

Speaking to GameSpot several weeks ago about the imminent launch of the Xbox 360, Robbie Bach, Microsoft's chief Xbox officer and senior vice president, weighed in on the next-console race. He said he largely saw the next several years as a two-party conflict between Microsoft and Sony.

"Nintendo is good and cute...and there's nothing wrong with that," he said. "They'll be a competitor, but in a different category almost. I don't think they have the same ambition that either Sony or Microsoft does in the more mainstream interactive entertainment space."

Bach's words were presumably based on Nintendo's long-standing policy that game consoles should be for games, period. This philosophy was at the core of the company's current-generation console, the GameCube, which uses a proprietary three-inch disc format, versus the DVDs used by the PlayStation 2 and the current and next-gen Xboxes.

However, it appears that will soon change. In a statement on its official Web site, the company "stated loud and clear that [it is] not to be overlooked in the next-generation home console race." Nintendo announced that its new console, code-named the "Revolution," will play DVDs and be backward compatible. "Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube three-inch discs, along with its own standard, double-layered DVD discs in the same self-loading media drive," said the company.

Speaking of DVDs, Nintendo also mentioned that the Revolution "will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer." This would make it the Japanese game giant's smallest console to date, as well as making it barely larger than Sony's new slimline PS2, which is about two times as thick and about an inch-and-a-half longer than a DVD case. Like the PS2 and the Xbox 360, the new Revolution will be able to lie on its side or stand on one end for horizontal or vertical display.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's statement, which appeared strategically timed to deflate some of the hype surrounding the Xbox 360's unveiling, had few other specific details. It reconfirmed details revealed in Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's 2005 Game Developers Conference keynote address. Namely, it reconfirmed that the Revolution will be "wireless Internet ready out of the box" and will be powered by an IBM CPU and an ATI GPU.

That said, the statement concluded with a tantalizing tease for Nintendo fans. "There's much more to Revolution that will be revealed over the coming months," it read, "but the combination of its compact size, wireless Internet, backward compatibility, quick start-up time, and quiet, low-power operation add up to the start of a great game system."

Nintendo also confirmed what has been long suspected...that the Revolution won't arrive until next year. The last line of the statement read, "Get ready for the Nintendo Revolution in 2006!"

Yes, it is one of the x (x = I don't remember how many) prototipes which Nintendo has designed with...K...I (I can't tell you the full name)

I'm sure that Nintendo won't change too much the final design. I couldn't see the final design of the controller, but I remembered a memorable quote from Nintendo... "It's revolutionary, it can be with our concept(...)"

Yeah, Revolution is VERY VERY VERY sleek... to have an internal (and great) thing...

Guys, Nintendo have Revolution on the 100% to can show it on this E3. Don't be worried about if Nintendo will show Revolution. I promise you that Nintendo has pride, and it doesn't leave that Sony or Microsoft win this E3... Revolution will eclipse this E3

Despite my english (I'm from Japan), I wanna continue talking about Revolution but, in this case, about Retro and Revolution and about graphics.

I've seen the best game that you'd never seen. 10 seconds, 10 seconds of a game which can change the world of video games. I'm not talking about "video fake" of Nintendo On, I'm talking about another thing, THE game.
This game has taken its toll on me.

"video fake" of Nintendo On is, obviously, a fake, a great fake. Let me tell you Revolution is still more impressive than it.

I don't know if this game will be on the E3. Nintendo have not answered to my question(...)

But I can tell you guys that it could change video games's concept. A great step.

Revolution's graphics are unbelievable better than Xbox 360. Time is an important factor.
