Footage from first PS3 Metal Gear to be shown at Sony conference

Metal Gear Solid 4 footage will be publicly shown tonight for the first time ever, gamesradar.com can reveal.

Clips from the game will be shown at Sony Computer Entertainment America's pre-E3 press conference, which takes place in Culver City, Los Angeles at 11pm (UK time).

As we revealed back in March, the game will be released for as-yet-unspecified next-generation consoles, although today's news suggests that the game will debut on PlayStation 3.

The game will be the first that isn't produced by Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima, who is moving on to another next-gen project (details of which are also expected to be announced at tonight's Sony event).

We're in LA at this very moment and will be reporting live from tonight's Sony and Microsoft conferences, which will be closely followed by tomorrow's Nintendo shindig.

Expect an avalanche of news, analysis, screenshots, photos and - yes - footage direct from sunny California over the coming week...
Although I still wish Kojima-san was a part of it, maybe this will take the franchise in a new direction, hopefully as good as the trilogy already out.

They should just do a major lampoon of the entire series, and have a geriatric Snake sneaking out of an old peoples home for retired secret agents.

Pfft, they do those parodies in the extras on the games or add-ons like MGS2: Substance. Snake Vs. Monkey was brilliant!

So no Kojima. Does that mean no social commentary that takes up half the game in cut scenes?

That depends on what his apprentice is like. For the most part, the plots of the games revolve around those issues anyway. You cut them out, and you've just got a basic stealth/action game with higher production values.

Doing some social commentary and exploring deep issues is fine, but Kojima tends to overdo it. It often sounds like all that stuff is being preached to us, rather than integrated realistically into the conversations. The anti-nuclear message in MGS1 was a slightly annoying, and all that lecturing about the nature of information just lamed up the ending to MGS2. I haven't played #3 yet. How was it? Was the preaching more tolerable than #2?

It's more on the Cold War and the stupidity of it, but then you get that from a lot of things and it typically was a weird time. Most of that is at the end anyway and ties in with plot points that cannot be divulged unless you want it spoilt.

Fuck, I haven't even touched MGS3 yet. I bought it, and havent played it. That's the first time that's happened.

It's all World of Warcraft's fault. I. MUST. LEVEL. UP.

I'm thinking it's Snake in Space. He's going to have to sneak onto an orbiting space station and prevent evil shenanigans from occurring. Mark my words.

I didn't like the Boss' end game wankst fest.

"Oh, when I was pregnant I parachuted into Normandy, gave birth on the battlefield, then the bad guys kidnapped my baby who I never saw again. I later had to kill my lover since I worked for the US and he worked for the Russians, it's SO SADD!11 And later, and later, I was sent into space but they knew nothing about the effects of radiation, so now my womb is toasted and I can't have any children at all!" Insert the sounds of the world's smallest violin crooning in the background. "And then, and then, and then, I was part of a super secret operation to steal secret technological and financial treasure troves established in WW2, so I've been pretending to be a traitor all this time so I could find out where they were, and I had to put my comrades in a situation that would get them all killed off, and I'll go down in history as a vile psychotic traitor but I DID IT ALL FOR MY COUNTRY AND I HAVE NO REGRETS!!!!!"

Does MGS3 clear up any of the questions from MGS2?

What the hell are the la-lei-lu-le-lo?

I too have the game, but I have yet to play a significant portion of the game.

I didn't mind the preachiness of 1 and 2. But 3 began to piss me off. I land in the jungle and before I have a chance to do anything, I'm being preached to about "feelings on the battlefield" and how "Snake must find a feeling to take with him on the battlefield to be a good soldier." It was the first time in a MGS game where I just wish the conversation would end.

After it just kept on happening every five minutes, I lost interest.

You get some of the backstory behind the la-lu-li-le-lo and a little info on who they are. But in their style you only get bits and pieces. And there's the usual dose of double-triple-quadrulpe crossing in the game, so you can't really know who's telling the truth.

Typical....

Are they human at least?

Sometimes I wonder wether or not Konami will just come out and say:

"Yeah, we don't know what the fuck's going on either."

Maybe you should, y'know, play the damn game and find out yourself rather than take second-hand views on the events. There's nothing in MGS3 that wasn't in the previous games plotwise.

Alas, My Poor PS2 (I call him george) has finally died due to disc read problems.

I've fixed it myself several times, but it just doesn't seem to take this time around...

I fear my PS2 has gone to that great Gamestop in the sky....

Was it one of the first edition models? They tended to have problems like the early PSX models too before they changed the CD rotation disc.

A bit offtopic, but I might be buying a used PS2 soon, and I was wondering how to tell the difference between the different models. Is there a number or something printed on them?

Or by "first edition models" do you just mean the ones produced before they started to make them all tiny and HD-less?

Actually, Eva tells you the last part. I was like, "Oh my god. This bitch won't stop angsting even after she's dead!"

Since we have people that haven't finished the game in the thread...

You find out that the Patrioits are an offshoot of the original group called "The Philosphers". As you can probably guess this group had 12 members, later to be known as "the Wiseman's commitee". There were members from both USA, Russia, and China. These are the 12 (human) people they talk about in MGS2 and they ARE dead and they WERE that old. Imagine that... Something near the end of MGS2 that was staed plainly and was true...
Anyway the Philosophers managed to get a vast fortune amassed. Big enough for the superpowers of the Cold War to be interested. It was called "The Philospher's Legacy". The location of this fortune is on a microfilm, which changes hands a LOT during the game. I think it ends in Ocelot's hands along with certain schematics for a so called "Metal Gear". The Patriots carry on the work of the Philosophers, but the Wisemen are dead. Kind of ironic for Soildus, really. He wanted to be a Wiseman, but there are no Wisemen anymore...

Other fun facts:
Big Boss had the codename "Naked Snake" and his real name apparently was Jack.
It was Ocelot that took out Big Boss' eye.
It was Big Boss that started Ocelot on that whole revolver thing.
The Boss was Ocelot's mother.
Big Boss lost his faith in the whole Cold War thing during Snake Eater.
Eating Russian glowcap mushrooms will refill your batteries, if you belive in it.

Anyway... That's the gist of the story. You'll notice I skipped over some of the major MGS3 characters in the spoiler, but they aren't really that important in the big picture.

I think the serial number helps. When I say "first edition models", I mean the ones that came out in 2000 like my brother's and not ones that are made years later or those new slimline ones.

McNum: Actually, Solidus wanted to kill them all, not become one. The fact that the original ones are already dead didn't occur to him. Them being dead 200 years could be another lie from the Patriots themselves anyway. Afterall, they lied to their own man, Ocelot, why should they tell anyone else the truth?

The sum of the money for the Legacy was around $100bn in '64 US dollars (so a shit load today) and remember, Eva was a triple-agent for the PRC, playing both the US and Volgin's crew for suckers. Though Ocelot trumped even her and that's how you get the Patriots coming about in modern America along with REX, RAY and Arsenal.

Yeah.

I know how to fix it manually, For some reason it just isn't taking this time.

I think it's finally dead....
