Opinions on vertical console designs

Vertical console designs are stupid.

What does everyone else think? The PS2 started an irritating brainbug, now EVERYTHING is fucking vertical. Nevermind that consoles should fit in with 19" entertainment components, or entertainment system design. Lets just make a ridiculous tower to sit precariously on a speaker or jam in between the TV and the amp. Blergh.

There are absolutely no advantages that I can see to such a design, and it just makes consoles even MORE separate from 'proper' home entertainment stuff.

And that is why all three next gen consoles play both vertical and horizontal. So you can fit it in where it fits best.

Vertical-only consoles are not smart, but can look okay if you have a television stand. You're right, though, that they should be able to fit in a horizontal set-up, too, like the next generation consoles.

Right, you can slap in PS2 vertical or horizontal. And if you look closely, both vertical-mode PS3 and X-BOX360 have little plastic nubs on the side for horizontal use.

I agree with the OP: Options are bad.

The alleged (although for PS2 largley useless) flexibility isn't the point. By adopting universally a 'flexible' vertical-or-horizontal design, these designs become more separate from existing TVs and amps and shit. I don't want a white dildo on my entertainment system: I want my console/media centre to either fit in with my stuff or replace it.

Consoles are separate, distinct objects. This shouldn't be the goal: it should fit in with lounge design as much as existing equipment does. The Revolution is small enough for these concerns to not matter, but even the Xbox looked utterly ridiculous sitting on top of 400CD changers or amps or under a $15,000 television.

That would be why I support the rapid shrinking of consoles from Sony and Nintendo. The T-reX-Box just looks screwy, being that big and obnoxious in the middle of it all, while the all-black and relatively small other consoles can be easier to blend in/hide.

You all boggle the mind, you can't even imagine a set up where a vertical console would fit perfectly, nice and snugly, into? Are you that set on hating the very option of putting a console vertically??

It's just an option!!! Very often utilised I might add.

I already stated that I didn't mind it if a console had the OPTION of standing vertically, but it should be able to sit horizontally, as well.

If the images that IGN has on the Revolution and the PS3 are any indication, then I really like what they've done with the console's exterior appearances. In particular, the Revolution looks great, though I'm not feeling the PS3's controller.

The Revoultion looks excellent, and it's slotdrive (and tilted attitude when used vertically) gets rid of the cd loading issues. It's also styled PROPERLY, and isn't a monolith to frustrated teens.

I just hope the slotlight changes colour to remind you there's a disc in the slot... :)

I prefer horizontal, with a flat top for stackability. The X-Box doesn't really have that and the Gamecube absolutely doesn't (the top-loading design limits placement options) but I like the good amount of real estate my PS2 has.

The Revolution looks fucking sweet, though. Seems to be about the size of a DVD-ROM.

the PS and PS2 wouldnt fit vertically but its not bad you get the option anyway. The Rev should fit tough so when I buy both, by placing the PS2 horizontal and the Rev vertical they should fit my tv-thingy

I want blinkenlightzen all over the damn thing because if it's not invisible, technology should look damn cool.
