Current state of HDTV technology?

The new consoles and the prospect of me getting a decent job in the near future have got me thinking about HDTV. I want a 40 or 50 inch screen with native 1080 x 1920 resolution and HDMI and VGA inputs for about a grand.
Since this is totally unreasonable, how close can I come with today's technology? Is now a good time to get an HDTV, or will technology leap ahead while prices plummet over the next year?
Is it at least possible to find a reasonably priced native 720p resolution screen with HDMI and anti-burn-in technology (for Plasma) or no noticeable ghosting (for LCDs)?
Finally, what's the best site to research this stuff? I tried the Google method, and found it to be quite useless.
