hacking the registers....

ok we have very obsolete registers at work...
I am currently reading the big black book (tm) that explains everyting about the registers and IT really doesn't want you to read it.
I have found out just how out of tune these puppies are, and they need cleaning, chip replacements (bad ram), and other bits..
oh and their all based on 386 motherboards.
so what's the practical, ethical, and legal thing for me to do?
suffer the slings and arrows of angry coustomers because the bad ram keeps loosing orders when the chips over heat?
do a little constructive cooling
replace the bad ram chips (do they still sell those?)
See if I can find some new 386 CPU chips that can be popped in and out, given how crappy the registers are acting lately?
oh, and I have just set up my own admin account and trainee accounts for the managers, as the managers don't know how to reprogram the master register, or the computer programs that run them....
